Neil Young - Every album ranked

Cant say I agree with the last placed album - Landing on Water - which I think is actually pretty good, but it's a pretty fair list overall.

After the Gold Rush is number one, OBVS.

Just gave Rust Never Sleeps a spin on my TT - I haven't listened to this in years. Certainly not NY's best album, which has to be After the Gold Rush followed closely by Everybody Knows this is Nowhere. I think Harvest should be higher but I realise I haven't bought a NY album after Hawks and Doves in 1980 except his brilliant live albums, Live at Massey Hall and Live at the Fillmore East, which of course were recorded in the early 1970s.

I'm pretty much in agreement with the top 5 - my order would go :
1) Tonight's The Night
2) Everyone Knows This is Nowhere
3) Rust Never Sleeps
4) On The Beach
5) Zuma
with After the Goldrush next

Perfect.

1. On the Beach
2. After the Gold Rush
3. Tonight's the Night
4. Everybody Knows this is Nowhere
5. Zuma

In order of what gets the most plays:

1. Ragged Glory
2. Live Rust
3. Trans
4. On the Beach
5. Everybody Knows This is Nowhere

(I prefer him when he's with The Horse)

Trans is a much underrated album, good to see mention, and so highly regarded.

I’ve a soft spot for “ This notes for you”.

Years ago the only Neil I had was a cassette twofer Harvest / ATGR.

These 2 remain amongst my most played Neil.
Zuma is probably my favourite but in reality it has some weak tracks.
EKTIN is up there too.

So top 5 with no rankings

Zuma
Harvest
After the Goldrush
Everyone knows this is nowhere
This notes for you

Honourable mentions
Harvest Moon
Unplugged.
Live Rust.

HOWEVER much as I like Neil I don’t think any of his albums would be in my top 20 albums. I don’t think he has any album without some filler.

.sjb

Deja Vu and everything he was involved with in Buffalo Speingfield.
Everybody...
After...
Harvest

A must for us fans is the movie 'Bandits' where Billy Bob Thornton uses various 'disguises' looking like Neil Y in different stages of his career!

Ragged Glory - probably the most played CD in my house. Properly hits the spot. Weld, Arc etc also but not so much.

I listened to Freedom a lot at the time, but not sure it has aged well.

I really liked Greendale, I thought it was pretty innovative and worked well, especially at the end.

After the Gold Rush, Harvest, Zuma and Neil Young are still classics IMO and sound very good on NYA master releases.

Not sure it counts but Decade is some compilation.

Must give Rust Never Sleeps another listen to see what all the fuss is about.

I’ve listened to Neil Young when he was in the Buffalo Springfield and I’ve got 20 odd Lp’s Of his my favourite is definitely “ Everybody knows this is nowhere “

Regards,

Martin

Always been rather fond of Comes a Time and American Stars and Bars.

I hope they never come into fashion. I’d hate to have to go off them.
