Speaker builder wanted - Dennis Murphy CAOW 1

This is a kit I built as a bit of a project, though ofc did the boxes myself, I thought I’d try 25mm birch ply for them. They’re not the cheapest 2 way as both the drivers are quite a price, I wanted to hear them for myself, and they are very good, within the constraints of using a 5.5” midwoofer and ported design

They look nice, and should certainly be worth a listen for the OP. I have the 5.25" Revelator in AOS Studio 12xl clones and they sound great - although in a big room I run them from 200Hz upwards, with 12" drivers filling in the bottom end. In a smaller room, or if you don't want full low bass, they should be fine.

That's a lovely build Paul - did you get a chance to listen to them against other similar stand mounts, any comparisons?

Yes, had a few and demo’d others over the years, would take these over an s10a or b&w805d3. Bit more natural and non fatiguing. They’re a touch behind the Titan 505’s for resolution and detail retrieval, but at 10-15% of the price they hold their own very well. Plenty of specs on Paul c’s site if interested, measurements, xo plans etc. Bargain for the kit cost

I've decided to build them, but taking a gamble that they will sound just as good in a small floor stander, wish me luck!

Enjoy, they’re really very good. Floorstanders will ofc be a bit of a compromise, these measure pretty flat and the xo was designed for the baffle they’re on, but if you keep the width the same and placement of drivers same as original from the top/sides you should be good/very close. I built mine with the slightly longer port and lower tuning frequency too

Speaker cabinets can be constructed by a local joiner or possibly carpenter. Some specialise in speakers but I think many would take on the job. For a modest 2 way design it is likely to cost significantly more than a commercial equivalent though. Can I ask why you want to pay someone to build this particular DIY design rather than simply buying a commercial equivalent?
You have got to be kidding. Yes you could buy a commercial design that would cost a similar amount, but it is going to be in a different league entirely to a Dennis Murphy designed DIY speaker, and I don’t mean in a good way!

I did buy a commercial speaker - Q Acoustics Concept 20. I thought they might be very good considering the effort they put into the cabinet.
They were certainly in a different league to the CAOW1s, they were so utterly inferior, it was shocking.

I also bought a pair of LS50s. Could have been a winner if they hadn't over-egged the upper mids.
