Beirut

Quite agree. Religions have surely been the most divisive factor in social evolution; topping even ethnic and tribal clashes, although these are largely intertwined with religion anyway.

Think you might have transposed a letter in 'sucking'. I certainly didn't scream 'suck' when that blast hit my lug-holes but phonetically it was close !:)

:D

Did anybody else see the elderly lady playing Auld Lang Syne on the piano in her devastated apartment earlier today? Very moving.

On a similar theme, at 6.30 tonight there’s a concert on a piano which survived the Hiroshima bomb, complete with bits of glass still embedded in it, streaming live on YouTube. It’s known as Akiko’s piano, after its owner at the time, who didn’t survive.

A recording of piece of Bach played on it a couple of years ago was broadcast on radio 3 this morning, and it was quite moving.

How big is this compared with current standard munitions?

Is it still very big, or just something casually dropped off the bottom of a B52 delivering a dose of "freedom" ?

Apologies. I read your post as spontaneous decompositon (ie no fuel needed).

AIUI ammonium nitrate is a powerful oxidising agent, so mixed with fuel oil, sugar etc you can light it with a match and it will burn intensely, however if it is compressed rapidly through a shock wave it will decompose very rapidly, this adds to the shock wave front that then propagates through the ammonium nitrate without the need for any additives to cause an explosion. The initial shockwave to set off pure ammonium nitrate can be dynamite or any other high explosive.

Going by Channel 4 News footage from Beirut tonight, a lot of people in Lebanon want a revolution. They have zero trust in politicians and have suffered decades of violence and corruption. The massive explosion has brought this to a head.

To bring about a revolution in a country split economically, politically and socially, by 35 tribes including Mafia clans is obviously a massive problem.

The pretty woman being video'd and photographed in her white wedding dress when the bomb went off has been interviewed. She said she felt very lucky to be alive and so sorry for those who have died and been injured. Her whole attitude was moving.

It must take a lot of nerve to live and survive in Lebanon.

Jack
