Free university education for EU students studying in Scotland will be scrapped after Brexit.
Holyrood's higher education minister Richard Lochhead said the Government will end free education for EU citizens starting their studies next year, with the money saved going towards encouraging more Scottish students into university.

There's a novel idea.

Of course that will not be allowed if Scotland joins the EU.

Of course they won't want to if they join the EU, only a klutz would think they'd want to miss the reciprocal opportunities.

In a report from 2017, HESA says :
  • 94% of first year undergraduates from Scotland chose to study north of the border

Oh really? Have the EU been providing free university education to Scottish students up until now?

So can we agree that charging for university education doesn’t preclude EU membership then?

Unsurprisingly you've misunderstood. Under the Erasmus programme, you study in another member state under the same terms and costs as you would in your home country. Students from countries that do not provide free third level education were already paying.

However, 2012 data from world heritage body Unesco on global movement of university students, which includes postgraduate and exchange students and full-time undergraduates, shows that, of around 33,000 UK students who studied abroad, around 13,000 studied in other EU countries.
Scottish universities alone have
Some 21,505 EU students studied at Scottish universities in 2018/19, according to the latest Holyrood figures. A total of 15,310 full-time students received funding in the same year.
The money which currently pays for EU student fees, up to £19m a year, will be kept in the higher education sector and should lead to an increase in the number of students from Scotland getting a place at university.

Figures show that more than 21,500 EU students studied at Scottish universities in the 2018/19 academic year, with 15,300 students receiving government funding while the cost of providing funded places to EU students was around £97m.

There are countries that offer free education

So Brexit is a leap of faith and nothing more? Call me Mr. Fussy, if you will, but I prefer to have some facts and likely costs vs benefits to the UK before deciding on whether such a hugely complex and complexly huge undertaking is a good idea or not.

Brexit would have been fine if Leave voters were only shooting their own feet but, alas, they're not.

62% of the electorate did not vote Leave yet they're having their feet shot all the same.

19 million is nothing. Works out at less than £4 a year per Scot.
Richard Lochhead MSP, Scotland’s higher education minister said the SNP led administration would save £19million a year. It comes after SNP MSP Alex Neil said the country could no longer afford the subsidy for “rich EU kids” at the “expense of our own kids.”

They don’t seem to have shown any propensity to head into the fields to pick the fruit appearing on supermarket shelves . Nor complain about the the charter planes full of Romanians comin in to do the work for them. Busy guarding the statues and getting pissed probably

We have a lot of international students in Ireland they help support the universities and bring much needed cash. My daughter has looked at the Scottish option and my understanding is if students commit to the NHS for a period of 4 to 5 yrs the fees are waived. Not 100% on that will check. I would strongly doubt Scotland is encouraging international students and denying a Tartan army of students. There are a lot more factors at play.
