R U going to the Barber's ...?

I note the barbers in my town favour the visor over the mask. It is perfectly designed to make sure their breath is channelled in the most concentrated and direct way down for the customer to breathe in.

Need some hair attention soon. My current look is probably best described as 'Homeless middle aged sex offender'.

Same here. I was okay with that until Summer came along. With this heat and humidity I need to get it whacked.

No chance, I'll keep DIYing it, number 4 all over. Not risking pubs, restaurants, barbers or anything like that until we get a better handle on it.

Mrs B has cut my hair twice during lockdown, both times with excellent results after following a few YouTube tutorials, using a combo of wahl clippers and hairdressing scissors from amazon. Each time my kids had begun to refer to me as Castaway. It’s fine for them, my daughter has long hair and my son is very happy with his Curt Cobain style locks, but I would much prefer a proper barbered “3 at the back and sides, longer / messy on top“. I can’t see any chance of an appointment round here in the next few weeks, and I’m not going to the pub either, so I can see two more home trims at least on the horizon.

Such nice replies.

The thing seems to be DIY and "Wahl" clippers.

My cousin Cecilie is married to a Wahl [in Norway] so Wahl "must" be good.

Methinks that maybe I give the barbers a miss just now - just like giving pubs a miss.

Best wishes and keep safe from George

I think that makes sense George. I have been into our office in London twice to dig out essential original documents from the walk in safe and it was a horrendous experience both times. Stay home and stay safe.

Grahame.

Dear Grahame,

Thanks!

Of course, I am risk averse. But my job is to operate the pumps at my petrol station. From the next shift on I'll be wearing a medical mask. This would be ahead of the curve.

Best wishes and keep safe from George

I don't know if it was the same in other parts of the country but round my way, almost as soon as lockdown started, a thriving black market in illicit hair cuts sprung up. You had to make an appointment and the barbers would cut your hair in a room at the back of the shop. The local BBC TV news even did a story about it and they reckoned about 30% of local barbers were engaged in clandestine operations, charging twice their normal prices.

Quite a few of my colleagues have been getting haircuts and it sound like a lot of barbers were doing them throughout lockdown.

While scamming the tax payer for government payments no doubt.

I'm going to have to shave my beard this week, I think I have work in a food factory starting Monday. I'm rather enjoying the flowing locks, I've been described as "Ibiza hippie" and "Wild Man of Borneo" so I'm going with that. I might have to buy a trials bike with ally panniers and work on the "when i was biking across Afghanistan" stories .

I have degenerated from the 'Michael Heseltine, slightly too long but swept back and reasonably tidy grey hair' look to 'Member of an obscure prog rock band re-forming after 40 years [probably the bass player who was on their first record but dropped out after a bad trip]' look.

I'm not going to the barbers, having purchased a set of clippers already, but I'm experimenting with re-growing the goatee I had around 15 years ago, while there are few people to see it. I may deny this ever happened.

One of the joys of growing a beard is the entertainment value in shaving it off. You can try the careful sculpting bit, move on to goatee, Frank Zappa, porn star bushy moustache, the full bit. There was one holiday I went on where a mate refused to come out with me when I was sporting what became known as "The Big Gay Moustache". We'd just walked into a bar when he said:
"I'm not coming out with you again until you shave that off. Those 3 women at the bar just blanked me"
"Get used to it mate, it happens all the time"
"Not to me it doesn't. They looked at a 6ft tall, muscly black bloke who walked in with a guy with a long bushy moustache, looked at each other, nodded and that was that."
A female friend who was on the same trip has called me Moustachio for years since.

That will be next to useless with a face full of fuzz - i wish your customers good luck......
Useless anyway unless to the correct spec, changed regularly, face fitted, trained person, blah blah blah. The protection most masks offer is as effective as a condom in a gunfight.

I'm booked in for next Tuesday for a long overdue trim. I used to just walk in but it's appointment only now. I've been asked to wear a face mask and bring hand gel, which I don't mind. It definately feels like the riskiest thing I've done since lockdown, but in the hot weather I wished I'd had less hair and I haven't said that in many years...
