Contemporary music

Yes, Henze is a worthy addition for sure. Can’t remember exactly what I’ve got other than a lovely old ‘60s DGG ‘tulip’ box of Der Junge Lord opera, but there’s another three or four in my vinyl collection. A couple of concertos and a symphony I think. I’ll have a look tomorrow!

I would insist that something composed in last 25 years had to be included.
(I would change a lot of other things too - like sensible dress code for the performers and be happy for applause between movements).

I'm a classical numpty but I've started enjoying attending concerts of contemporary composition (though I suspect much of this music may get filed under sudoku :))

I’d certainly add a bit more minimalism to that list (Riley, Reich, Glass, Nyman) as much of it is very accessible and beautiful. Gorecki too.

.

Have you heard Julius Eastman, Gay Guerrilla, for example? A bit like New York minimalism and very sincere, authentic music.

British composers were very good at minimalism, though not the tonal flat repetitive kind of music that Glass writes. Just simple music made with small resources, inspired by early Satie and Cage probably. Maybe you’ll like Laurence Crane, or some things by Richard Emsley.

The Fung disc is magnificent. I recently re-listened to it, and the sheer inventiveness and listenability of the orchestral works is striking.

This is an excellent disc, I very much enjoyed it.
