Science now knows how to make your hi-fi sound better.

Don’t drink! According to this study, even a moderate amount of booze increases your hearing threshold by 7dB or so across a wide range of frequencies - more if you are female.

I can believe it - I don't think it sounds as good to me after alcohol, or if I'm suffering from any kind of illness. To me, my hifi sounds best when I am both relaxed and reasonably alert, and able to listen fairly intently. If I'm tired (e.g. after a long or difficult day at work) it doesn't sound so good.

As I've hinted on another thread, one's aural perceptions are heavily coloured by state of mind.
 
I think a couple of glasses of anything sharpens the wits and other senses... it's the next glass that begins the downward slope. But by then... who cares? ;)
