Hs 2 review

Really?
Liverpool missed out on getting a tram system due to London winning the Olympic bid as the country could not get enough steel to build both.
I think the Manchester Media Mafia AKA Granada TV has stated loud and clear that Manchester is the biggest winner in all things including transport, East Manchester has been 'improved' with lots of Gov. money

LOL
Granada TV ceased to exist about 20 years ago!
I hope the rest of your post is more accurate.

Liverpool has had huge amounts of investment in terms of the waterfront including Museum of Liverpool, Tate etc. I agree that Manchester has hoovered up cash, BBC etc. It obviously benefits from The Beatles also. Liverpool has certainly had more investment than Sheffield for example. Anyway, I am not saying that Liverpool is not deserving of the investment, the North as a whole is suffering from lack of cash compared to LSE.

Even if they go ahead it is basically still Victorian technology. China is building maglev and we are one step ahead of steam.

We shouldn't compare ourselves to China; their technological advances have been made at a huge human and environmental cost.

I was surprised to learn today that HS2 was supposed to run at 400kmh, which is 80 kmh faster than the fastest high speed rail in Europe. Why? It’s not even as though these are long distance journeys.

I believe that if you redesigned it for 250kmh you could be more flexible on the routing, and would use considerably less energy to run the trains. Given the distances, the extra journey time to Brum would be around 10 minutes, and about the same from Brum to Manchester. I imagine the infrastructure would be a fair bit cheaper too.

Why the hell do we go so overboard with these infrastructure projects? If you could halve the cost, I bet you could also get HS3 from Liverpool to Sheffield via Leeds for the same overall budget as HS2 is currently forecast to cost.

AIUI, it was only going to be able to run at max chat for the first 80 miles out of London.

That’s even worse. The rolling stock must be massively more expensive than stuff designed for 250, or even 300 kmh.

It does start to look like a vanity project, doesn’t it.

I was broadly in favour of HS2, on the basis that we would benefit from the extra capacity, and a 21st century railway shouldn’t be built to 20th century standards. But this just looks like massive, stupid, pointless overkill. Starting to find myself moving over to the detractor side, to my surprise.

And of course Liverpool.. which the Tories hate and the feeling is mutual... wasn't even in the frame. Complaints upthread about getting from Manchester to Sheffield. Yep.. it's bad.. But if you start from Liverpool...... :(

Yep, it's just over 30 miles from Liverpool to Manchester. A pro/semi pro cyclist can do that in about hour. The train service struggles to do the same. Pathetic doesn't go near describing the inadequacy of the infrastructure that exists close to Edge Hill where Stephenson's Rocket was first driven.

How much would it cost to travel on? It won’t get people to give up their cars. We’d all rather sit in traffic killing ourselves.

I am not sure how China’s human rights and environmental record is relevant, the issue is that the technology is out there other than in China and we are doing what the UK always seems to do in adopting outmoded technology rather than leading the field.

It better get bloody built after the Bree Louise (probably the best pub in Zone 1) was bought up and closed to make way for it.

Really?.. Forgive me.. but I thogught we, and the entire developed world were awash with steel?

Money... and political disaproval. That simple.

Perhaps a small proportion of the money that is likely to be spent on HS2 should be used instead to improve stations and existing rail infrastructure so that trains can run more frequently when needed, with enough carriages to accommodate peak demand. So, longer platforms for longer trains; and I'm sure that someone is already working on signalling etc to squeeze more rail traffic onto existing lines. So, I would like to see more capacity along existing lines and maybe even open up some old branch lines, as they have done in SE Scotland, to good effect?

HS2 will blight many lives along its routes, irrespective of their political views or voting intentions. I did once ask a leading acoustics specialist who had worked on the noise/vibration modelling for HS2 and was shocked to hear how cursory much of the modelling and predictions were. Some communities are likely to be shaken to bits if HS2 does go ahead.

Transport Secretary Grant Schapps said it was "responsible" to see whether the benefits really "stack up".

Pity he doesn't apply the same level of responsibility when his mouth does Brexit diarrhea.

Scrap this ridiculous project - it's already done greater harm to people and to the environment compared with the supposed benefits it was going to bring.
