First ten albums you owned

Joe Hutch

Mate of the bloke
I was listening to Fleetwood Mac's 'Then Play On', and I realised it was one of the first albums I bought. Which set me thinking which others I owned when I was a nipper. The very first was 'Rubber Soul', which is a bit of a cheat, because it was a Christmas present. The next, and the first I actually bought myself, was the White Album, with some birthday money, and I think I bought the Lovin' Spoonful compilation with the balance. After that, the order of purchase gets a bit hazy. I can date Led Zep II quite accurately, because a schoolfriend borrowed it and I never saw it, or him, ever again (his family emigrated). I can remember buying 'John Wesley Harding', but not any of the others. Anyhow, here it is, FWIW, roughly in order of purchase:

Beatles: Rubber Soul

Beatles: White Album

Lovin’ Spoonful: Greatest Hits

Bob Dylan: John Wesley Harding

Led Zeppelin: Led Zeppelin II

Fleetwood Mac: Then Play On

The Band: The Band

John Mayall: Looking Back

Cream: Best of Cream

Syd Barrett: The Madcap Laughs

Abba Greatest Hits
Boomtown Rats - A Tonic for the Troops

Police - Outlandos D'Amour
David Bowie - Hunky Dory
Stars on 45 - the album (how sad?)
Boomtown Rats - The Fine art of Surfacing

Certainly a warts and all collection.

* I still have the original LP!

This is tricky, trying to reconstruct the list from memories of Christmas and birthday presents from when I was six or seven years old. This looks reasonably accurate; I still own the same copies of the ELO and ABBA albums.

Electric Light Orchestra “Out Of The Blue”
Queen “A Day At The Races”
Various “BBC TV’s Best Of Top Of The Pops Volume 8”
The Police “Zenyatta Mondatta”
John Lennon & Yoko Ono “Double Fantasy”
Madness “Absolutely”
The Beatles “Rock And Roll Music Volume 1”
Electric Light Orchestra “Time”
ABBA “The Visitors”
Electric Light Orchestra “Face The Music”

I was quite late into buying my own albums as I have two elder brothers and recorded everything I liked from them. ( what a scabby law breaker I was back then! )

My very first album purchase was definitely Genesis Seconds Out.
For the other nine it would be something like;
Deep Purple In Rock
Genesis Foxtrot
Camel The Snow Goose
Pink Floyd Wish You Were Here
Rainbow Long Live Rock n Roll
Led Zep In Through The Out Door
Peter Gabriel "melt"
Rick Wakeman "Legends"
Stranglers a best of compilation
Joe Satriani Not Of This Earth

No claims to accuracy there but pretty likely.

Blimey, no dodgy first purchases up there chaps

Can't remember that many but being honest think the first one bought for me was a Pinky & Perky thing, though for street cred reasons I prefer to believe it was for my older brother

Pretty sure the first album I bought myself was Blondie's Parallel Lines when I was 10, with The Police's Regatta de Blanc not far behind

The Police - Regatta de Blanc
The Police - Zenyatta Mondatta
The Police - Ghost in the Machine
U2 - October
Ultravox - Rage in Eden
OMD - Architecture & Morality
Depeche Mode - Speak and Spell
Duran Duran - Duran Duran

and then probably working to back catalogue:
OMD - OMD
Ultravox - Vienna

I was 12 in 1979 so not particularly early starter. Still have all of them.

I can date Led Zep II quite accurately, because a schoolfriend borrowed it and I never saw it again.

Snap :(

The Beatles - Let It Be
The Beatles - Sgt Pepper
The Who - Tommy
Led Zep II
T Rex - Electric Warrior
ELP - Picures at an Exhibition
ELP- Emerson Lake & Palmer
ELP - Tarkus
The Who - Whos Next
David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust

Focus 3
JSD band - Travelling Days
Gentle Giant - In a Glass House
King Crimson - Islands
Steeleye Span - Parcel of Rogues
Yessongs
Quadraphenia
Jan Dukes de Grey - Sorcerers
History of Fairport Convention
Genesis - Selling England by the Pound

Of these Focus 3, Quadrophenia and Islands still get regular airing...Had Selling England on the other day, too - gorgeous beginning. I see Jan Dukes de Grey would be worth a few bob if I still had it....

Tchaikovsky - Symphony 5 - Markevitch
Mozart - Horn Concertos - Dennis Brain
Richard and Linda Thompson - I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight
Clifford T Ward - Mantelpieces
Steeleye Span - Hark! the Village Wait

and then it gets a bit hazy

I still have all five.

First three:

T. Rex - The Slider
T. Rex - Flyback: The Best Of T.Rex
Slade - Sladest

From there I’m not sure of the order, but down a bit of a prog/space-rock rabbit-hole with Pink Floyd, Hawkwind, Yes etc, plus more T. Rex. Things changed in late-79-80 when the post-punk/new-wave scene, which was the first music I viewed as being ‘my’ generation.

Lordy, I can't even remember school much

I think the 1st 4 were:

Tomita - Snowflakes are dancing
LZep - SRTS
Uncle Ted - Double live Gonzo
Jerry Reed?

Scary Monsters and Super Creeps - Bowie
Hunky Dory - Bowie
Absolutely - Boxer
The Man Who Sold The World - Bowie
Metal Heart - Accept
The Pleasure Principle - Numan
Queen 1 - Queen
Adolescence Sex - Japan
Quiet Life - Japan

Other than the Accept LP they all get regular airings. Metal Heart is good for a couple of tracks when I'm in the right mood.

I adore Japan, Mr Webb and Bowie; huge talents.

First three:

T. Rex - The Slider
T. Rex - Flyback: The Best Of T.Rex
Slade - Sladest

From there I’m not sure of the order, but down a bit of a prog/space-rock rabbit-hole with Pink Floyd, Hawkwind, Yes etc, plus more T. Rex.

I had a brief prog 'moment' (and still have King Crimson's Lizard, Jethro Tull's Aqualung and Procul Harum's Home as evidence), then I discovered the Velvets through Richard Williams' articles in Melody Maker, and from them to Iggy Pop and The Stooges. The only T. Rex I have is the Music for Pleasure compilation, which is mainly acoustic stuff plus Ride a White Swan, and the Big Hits compilation, with quite possibly the tackiest cover art in Christendom.

From memory.

King Crimson - The court of the crimson king.
Cream - Disraeli Gears.
Uriah Heep - Very heavy very humble.
Frank Zappa - Hot rats.
Genesis - Trespass
Deep Purple - In rock.
Hawkwind - In search of space.
The Groundhogs - Who will save the world.
John Mayall - Blues from laurel canyon.
Tractor - Tractor.

Although I still rate 'em, I'm anticipating a kicking for Dexy's and Altered Images :)

AI maybe, but surely not for Dexy's?

Which reminds me of the best newspaper headline I ever saw, when Kevin Rowland exited a curry house late in the day without paying

'Dexy's Midnight Runner'
