Buying a Porsche but is a cheap one a non starter ?

A friend took a punt on an early 996 last week that had hung around in the trade for a while........2 owners 71k miles and very,very tidy. I think the reason it stuck around is because it was green, however I like the colour.

I've since been in the car and driven it and it is in lovely condition inside and out and drives very tight. 13.5k.

Has to be a bargain.
 
996 is what's in my price range, and I was given very strong advice by a local Porsche specialist to go for a 996 over a 997 every time. They reckoned good 996s are about as cheap as they're going to get, and likely to start climbing.

Still have to convince the boss so it's unlikely to happen before prices rise.
 
You won't lose much on a 996 unless you're extremely unlucky, there has been a theory that if the IMS hasn't gone by 50k miles it's ok.

At a higher mileage we run ours on a thicker M1 5W-50 and accept a few wearing parts to wear, parts are cheap as there are loads of decent aftermarket suppliers.

I wouldn't value our '03 Carrera cab on 100k miles much over £10k but it's a lovely car to drive and hasn't given any big bills (yet!).

Having said that I did a second service on a small Mazda last week at 101k miles, seems to run ok and hadn't been touched apart from some brake work four years ago; quite a testament to build quality.

Spot on Rob, if it's a 911 you want without breaking the bank the 996 is the obvious route, although prices for good ones are now on the up....with the turbo flying the nest 5 years ago.

In fact a nice 996 now commands more than a few early 997 cars depending on condition/mileage etc. Good luck mate with the search.
 
996 prices are definitely on the rise for the right spec. Ideally C2, manual, with M030 suspesion. Early ones (98-99) have the orginal dual row IMS which doesn't fail. They also have the ferrous coated KS pistons which don't cause bore scoring, it was the later change to plastic coated Mahle that started to cause issues. A friend has one of these and it's just hit 150k miles and going strong.

996 C4S prices are silly now, but possibly the best looking rear end of any car. I nearly bought one, but went for a 997S instead as I felt the 2WD is a bit more fun.

I doubt they'll ever reach crazy prices as there are too many, but a good one is a sound investment now as long as it's kept nice.

Mine's just cost me £1300 for a major service as it needed a few bits doing in addition to thr service. And then the water pump went which was another £500. :( I reckon budget £2k a year for servicing and maintenace.

I have an Audi A2, and I budget £500 a year for servicing and maintenance. But if I cost in the big bills it's handed me over my 13 years of ownership, it's a bit north of £1k a year, so a 911 for less than twice that seems like a bargain.
 
I've had mine for 3 years, so far it's had:

Minor service: £300
Major services: £1300 (had a bunch of other stuff done (plugs, belts, brake fluid, headlamp sensors, exhaust rebuild) would have been ~£650 otherwise).

A new alternator: £500
Water pump: £500
Tyres: £900
Headlamp washer nozzle (fell off): £55
Coil packs (were ok, but changed as a precaution): £200 (after discount from Eurocarparts)
Exhaust heat shields: (£20 for parts)

Will need new brakes later this year (probably £300 for parts, I'll do it myself).
Will probably need coffin arms shortly (£2-300 for parts)

I've also changed the oil more regularly, but that's just me.

Not silver. Not that cack navy blue either. Probably leaves black which will show up just about every bodywork fault you would ever wish you hadn't spotted!
 
Was he killed there? Jesus.

You don't realise, because there are so many TT crash videos where people get away with light injuries after having flown through the air and missed a dry stone wall at 100mph, that not everyone is that lucky.
Afraid so, his engine seized / exploded and spat oil on his rear tyre at what looks like 150mph.
