New House

Yes it is good. Had it in my basket the other day but took it out again to reign in the spendyness. Will revisit.

Mark Broom again, again, again

reign in the spendyness

It's not just me then!

So much good stuff out there....I think I might need a second job!

I have to say, since picking up some CDJ's, being able to buy individual tracks has allowed me to actually acquire more stuff that I like since I'm not now restricted to buying vinyl - I have wavered so many times on records that only contain one track that I like. It definitely allows more flexibility. Will still buy the record if it's all killer, though!

Anyway, back on topic - really feeling this earlier. Thanks Darrell for your earlier post which brought this artist and label to my attention.

The tempo and time signature change around the 2.15 minute mark is brilliantly done and makes me think that this guy is a real master of his machines.

^Some excellent tracks there guys. The re-issues that Darrell posted will be much appreciated by many I think. My pick has to be that stunning 'Bride Of Quietness' track from Emmanuel though. Thanks to farfromthesun for letting me know about that one. Oh, and your mix is ace too!

I've been checking out Emmanuel's Soundcloud page, and as well as techno as you might expect there's Latin pop/ballads on there (including a Christmas album) that appear to be produced by the completely unrelated Jesús Emmanuel Arturo Acha Martínez, who is a Mexican singer/songwriter. A bit cheeky if you ask me, but maybe it's his warped sense of humour and his way of throwing off the techno purists!

Unsurprisingly, as I love his Physical album (and Factory Floor), I'm loving the reworks of Gabe Gurnsey's New Kind.

The Alabaster one does have a nice groove - there seems to be some decent "builders" out there at the moment. Far more appealing than the loopy techno by numbers crap that appears to be absolutely everywhere. Digging for decent tracks can be frustrating, but the rewards are there as I think that this thread proves.

The CDJ's were £300 on eBay, Darryl - second hand CDJ-1000's. They're not USB and don't have a fancy display - not that I don't salivate over bits of kit like the CDJ Nexus 2000 or whatever - but I just don't need that. I never imagined this day would arrive, but I'm not buying and mixing music for any other reason that my own self indulgence and enjoyment. If other people like what I cobble together, then that's a bonus. In my view, this approach suits my needs perfectly at this moment in time. My previous and long standing position as a purist, vinyl only DJ doesn't make sense with the abundance of music and technology that's out there now, not to mention the cost. I saw a 4 track 12" for £14.99 on either Bleep or Boomkat today. At those prices it'd cost £100's to put a set together, and that must be stifling physical music sales in dance music world - whereas I used to bag up on £5 12's from Fat Cat, Eukatech and Atlas back in the day!

I conclude that jealously needn't be a factor - for £150 (give or take), you could just get one and see where it leads you....

I never imagined this day would arrive, but I'm not buying and mixing music for any other reason that my own self indulgence and enjoyment.

The very best of reasons. You're right it does cost hundreds for a set. I do a four hours once a month just for the love as a favour to a friend. I frequently question the sanity of this with regard to cost and hassle, but by the end that question vanishes to the moment and its all worth it (including getting over the nerves which never seem to release me).

Thanks for taking the time to explain your thinking and direction. I have a CD player which hasn't been fired up for at least 5 years. I tried to switch to CD for home listening but got frustrated at not being able to find the music I wanted on the format. Vinyl verses CD was easy; for me there was just better music on the 12" format. Vinyl verses files and I start to feel dumb cos its obvious. The cost benefits of single track purchases and the benefits of a non fossil fuel based medium are hard to ignore.

All my musical life has been based around the 12" format. I've only really got a few LP's which are mostly treasured reggae albums. I literally have no experience of CDJ's and I spent so many years in record shops as a customer or working, that records are really all I know. Old dogs and all that...I'll think on.

PS. I still have some way to go with regard to 'craft perfection' with the single format. Its not shit but could be better as in all things.
