Bach: D minor violin partita on R3 Inside Music. Great programme. Lard Voigt making the selections this week and his connection with them.

Holy crap. As if being able to choose from a piano trio or clarinet trio version for the Gassenhauer wasn't enough, along comes a trio of young hot shots rotating in a viola. Obviously, Mr Mönkemeyer plays as well as humanly possible, and his two cohorts are fully up to snuff. I've never heard the piece bettered by any ensemble, and the viola adds a different dimension and warmth to the music. The pristine sound convinced me that I need to get some solo Maximilian Hornung stuff - to date, I've only heard his ensemble playing.

The remainder of the disc is given over to transcriptions of works and movements from seven different composers, and some transcriptions were put together by the musicians themselves. As with Mönkemeyer's other mixed rep discs, they are all most excellent, with the two Tchaikovsky pieces perhaps the best. Also as with his Mozart disc, Mönkemeyer is content to sit out some pieces to let his partners shine. This is how to do a mixed rep disc. It's a corker.

I'm still looking for the perfect recording of Rachmaninov's 3rd Concerto. Ashkenazy with either Previn or Haitink, Hough, Argerich, Volodos and others I can no longer remember somehow fail to completely satisfy so tried this one from Valentina Lisitsa currently available for only £2.97 from Presto. It had very varied reviews but sounds quite good to me! But the search will continue.

Amazon Link (but its cheaper at Presto).
You could always try Russia’s Lang Lang-

...then again, perhaps one to be avoided.

Looks like Lang Lang has so far only recorded the 2nd concerto.... with Gergiev. Won't be going on my shopping list.

Pavel Kolesnikov's rendering of Louis Couperin's Suites. Unusual to hear this on a modern piano, but somehow it works for me. Very good sound.

My favourite recordings of these pieces have been the pair of double CDs by Christophe Rousset, both recorded on superb old instruments (even though the tuning on the first set takes a little getting used to).

Scriabin, symphony no.3, Ashkenazy & RSO Berlin. But I had to switch it off after 10 mins as it was just so awful!
I might force myself to listen to one of Medtner's piano concertos now, see how long I can endure that.

I feel your pain:D
It can be very disappointing and mildly irritating when,no matter how you try,you cannot seem to connect with some pieces. They just leave you cold and unmoved.
