The 2017 F1 Thread

It's just Silverstone manoeuvring itself into a better negotiating position. I really don't like the place, but no other circuit in the UK can cope with an F1 GP.

Brands Hatch is my favourite British Circuit to drive. The section from Paddock Hill through Surtees is just glorious.

British GP at Cadwell Park would be, er, interesting :)

Brands is my favourite too, but they'd have to destroy it to hold a GP. I'd rather they didn't. I love being in the pits or over on the GP extension where there's no PA system. Heaven.

There is nowhere other than Silverstone that could hold a GP. No other track could afford to upgrade even if they could get planning permission to do so.

Was anyone else in Trafalgar Square for the F1 demo yesterday? It was great to hear the old engines again. Bring the noise!

I would have loved to go - could you see anything or was it packed with people ?

It looked packed out on the main runs from what i could see. I was working in the paddock area by the Corinthia hotel so it was obviously quieter there.

It looks like Toro Rosso are in trouble for trying to enter Sainz's car in an unsafe condition. A wheel tether was frayed, but worse than that, the tether showed signs of repairs. So TR were knowingly attempting to enter a defective car, AND they've refused to replace the tether when requested to do so by the scrutinisers.

Very strange.

^ Strange, scrutineering is not normally an area of debate. It's a pretty binary situation, sure argue all you like, but no scrutineering sticker = no race:) I've had a few debates in my time but essentially that normally involves grovelling and showing willingness to correct or explain the reason for a particular 'feature'.

On a separate matter, what was with Hamilton not turning up for the London promotion yesterday? Doesn't sound like he's quite so there for his fans as he'd like everyone to believe.

Verstappen driving Silverstone in Assetto Corsa which is the sim I play most. He didn't post his times but he looks pretty solid and I suspect he is within a few tenths of me.

Hamilton, like most (all?) F1 drivers spends a lot of his time engaging with the fans, especially disadvantaged fans. But that doesn't appeal to the media, even the specialist media.

Looks like he's coming in for a bit of flak, which to be honest I can understand. I think if Vettel did similar in Germany, or any of the other drivers at a home event it would look odd as well. I think the fact that he was the only missing driver makes it stand out more starkly. Personally I could care less, I like watching him race, it just seems like a strange move.

Lewis admits he keeps away from the other drivers whenever he can. I knew he wouldn't be at that event as it means sharing the spotlight with the other guys. It was interesting seeing how the other drivers get on with each other. I'd say Alonso is the most popular with fans & drivers alike.

Vettel didn't like his test with the 'shield' at all today. He managed just one lap, coming in complaining about very distorted vision through the device, and the downdraught pushing his head forwards.
