Replacing BNC terminal with RCA on Naim Nac 32.5?

Hi Guys.

I fully agree with the sentiments on BNC connectors, while the bulk head sockets are usually not too bad, the crimped-on plugs were horribly unreliable. At work our test equipment and mobile data acquisition sensor cabling were all BNC, we became rather good at replacing the BNC connectors incredibly quickly.

It was always standard practice to test and inspect each BNC plug on every cable before taking them out into the field as well as packing a few spare cables to cover the ones that would fail in service.

My local electronics shop sells posh looking gold-plated, bulk-head mounted RCA sockets for a few dollars each. I’m sure Maplin’s, Mouser, Farnell … (insert retailer of your choice here) will have an equivalent product. Look for the sockets that are insulated from the bulk-head/rear panel (like the ones in the attached photos), these are probably considered better but probably not that important for this application.

I replaced the BNC’s with some of those posh RCA’s on my NAC72 and never looked back. BNC is good for 50 OHM RF connections but a MM or MC cartridge is not RF and the NAIM preamp is bandwidth limited anyway so RF is never going to be an issue.

… I must admit, as much as I like the look and feel of the naim gear I just don’t get the BNC thing.

Thank you very much for the photo's that's really helpful. :)

What type of RCA's did you go for and where from? Thanks.

When I replaced one pair of my 72's BNC sockets with RCA I had to drill the holes out a bit bigger, but this was when using 'fancy' silver CMC ones.

No problem Rallye_punk… These sockets were purchased from my local electronics shop called Altronics. I’m guessing you’re not based in Australia so this link is probably not much good to you.

The good news is that similar sockets are pretty easy to get at any electronics retailer. I have seen the same socket at Maplins, Mouser or Farnell if you don’t mind premium pricing. Google is your friend on this use “Gold plated RCA Socket”…. try these links for starters ...

My photo shows a slightly different looking socket since I changed the sockets quite some time ago but I have used the shown socket in other projects and they are just as good.

Hope this helps.

sleeving is important with phono .experience shows that the clear sleeving has a better di-electric /resistance than coloured,, fitted so it just slides over connection. maplin have small packets ready cut

What you mean over the actual soldered joint internally?
