Advice on Marantz CD6000 KI upgrades

Hi everyone

I am new to the forum and posess little or no electronics knowledge. I am on a mission to upgrade my humble Marantz cd600 ki after I heard the improvements in my friend's cdp of the same model. It was modded by audiocom. I have searched this and one other forum for some guidelines.

So far I have settled on a Clock upgrade + psu from Net-audio which seemed to be of reasonable value...or atleast more so than Trichord and Audiocom.

as to the rest of the mods I am open to suggestions.

But I have a few specific questions regarding the Audiocom upgrade scheme and would be very greatful if those in the know would be kind enough to answer them

Audiocom upgrade scheme:

http://www.1st-4-audio.com/control/news/anmviewer.asp?a=131&z=36111

1.are the "sonic" upgrades possible at a lower cost.?
2.Are there suitable substitutes for the Black Gates?
3.is the proposed scheme for the implementation of the BGs an effective one?
4. are there cheaper substitues for the voltage regulators? I have on the ALW site but gather that they are not sold as completed units. is that correct?
5. I have been trying to find the replacement Schottky diodes advocated by Audiocom in the scheme without luck. what other diodes can one use?

here is a link to the schemetics of the 6000 ose which i believe is the same as the KI

You will have to select TUNNING -t-> MARANTZ --> CD6000 ose
then click on the word in blue text "tutaj"

Hi Shamsur

Did you ever get anywhere with your mods? I've finished my pre/power-amp upgrades and am now planning to mod my Marantz CD6000 KI Signature.

My first priority is voltage regulation: swapping the L7805CV (L78XXCV series, really, due to +12v, -12v etc) fixed voltage regulators for ALW superregs. The difference this made to my preamp was simply incredible and I'm going to try it in the CD6000.

I'm not quite sure which regulators to replace first. I might whip the PCB out and trace the tracks for the clock rail and do that one, as it's likely to have the biggest effect.

Any suggestions?

Cheers,
Carl

Hi Carl,
I am afraid I took up the easy option. Traded it in for a Restek which was subsequently modded by CPT. What I can tell you is that my mate's CD6000 modded by audiocom (clock 2, power supply and super regs) did make an appreciable difference even if the top end remained a little rolled off. Having more money than sense he had everything done in one go so I really do not know which was most effective. I hope you have more luck in attracting the advice you are looking for than I did! Otherwise try diyaudio.com where there are a few threads dedicated to the CD6000.

Best of luck,
Shamsur

Aha! I thought that my rolled off treble was to do with the fact that when I replaced the 1K and 12K resistors in my preamp's gain stage with RC55Ys, I ordered 12K1 by accident! I've been meaning to get the correct resistors for ages, but if you're saying slightly rolled off treble is a characteristic of the CD6000 KI, then maybe it's time to get rid of it and buy a CD3 / CD3.5.

I'll still replace the 12K1s with 12Ks, but at least I know where the main problem lies.

Cheers,
Carl
