    Audial Model S DAC

I have the mk1, so it’s 2x SPDIF inputs only, and responds well to an ultra-low jitter transport, where the USB is much more tolerant. Also @Juancho I was a little underwhelmed at first compared to the rich and beefy Theta DAC I was using before, it took me a little while to fully appreciate...

    Audial Model S DAC

I’ve been running my Audial Model S since June 2012, so over 11 1/2 years, and it’s still working flawlessly. The reason it’s recommended to turn the unit off when not in use is that the TDA1541A is a hungry, hot-running chip. It is socketed in the Audial units and I do have a few spares...

Best/cheapest streaming service for CD quality sound

TIDAL for me, as the library is better suited to my music tastes vs Qobuz. FLAC is CD quality. If people are hearing differences, it’s worth mentioning that TIDAL (also Spotify) has volume normalisation enabled by default, this should be disabled for meaningful comparisons with Qobuz, otherwise...

Best advice you ever got/ never got in your long hifi career.

Listen to the music, and avoid listening to the HiFi. It took me a long time to get off the HiFi merry-go-round and back to where I started before I got into all this stuff - enjoying the tunes, without dissecting the presentation.

    World’s Best Cables

My bass guitar lead is from them, it uses Gotham GAC-1 Ultra-Pro cable for lowest capacitance & great shielding, and Neutrik NP2X-B TRS plugs. What’s not to like, especially at the price. :)

Best way to listen to Spotify.

I just use the Spotify App on my iPhone, and if not using it as a portable device with IEMs and am at home, then I’ll use AirPlay to connect to my Allo DigiOne streamer (running Volumio), which in turn is connected to my DAC. Easy peasy and rock solid.

System / Music that makes your room sound bigger.

Massive Attack’s “Mezzanine” has a huge, enveloping sound.

    Rich sounding speaker suggestions

Came into say this. They have quite a rich and warm balance, but with plenty of boogie, tuneful low bass, and some of the most natural sounding and non-fatiguing top end I’ve ever heard. They just sound “right”, if you like this sort of balance and are not a detail and “transparency” freak...

What are your top "test" tracks and why?

Here’s a few of mine: Massive Attack - Dissolved Girl Great bass and “presence” test with some silky female vocals to top it off. Joni Mitchell - The Last Time I Saw Richard Stripped back, up front and personal, does Joni sound like she’s in the room? I find the production a bit bright, so...

What are your top "test" tracks and why?

This album sounds good on anything, probably one the best produced pop albums of the 80s, or ever… It’ll sound “special” on a decent system though.

Best £100 external cd burner recommendations

I like the big Freecom units, which are effectively internal drives in an external caddy.
