Worth moving from MC to MM to cheaply change phono styli more frequently?

I recently tried a D103 (not the r) after a long time using more exotic MCs. It was very enjoyable on my PTP/Korf and it covered its tracks very well, not highlighting where it was lacking. I was careful not to over tighten the screws (5cNm or less) and maybe that is important. Going back to an...

Decent metadata in your music files - do you care?

Back in my relative youth, we’re in the vinyl era here, I used to know the names of the tracks I was listening to. When CDs arrived, somewhat later than for most, I gave up worrying about it as the small writing on their covers coincided with deteriorating eyesight and I didn’t always have my...

    "What's The Bloody Point?"

They say customers asked for it. Well probably not for a rebadged Rega specifically but it’s what they’ve got. I wonder if there’s anything to distinguish it from an actual Rega, some VTA adjustment perhaps or a separate ground wire?

Let’s hear it for Rega gear

For a while I used a Rega DACr fed from a Naim Core via a Belden 4694r cable and it was way more enjoyable than its price might suggest it should be. Recently I’ve got round to trying a Denon 103 on my Korf and it reminded me of the DAC in some ways cutting to the music in a way that made the...

current input phono stages (MC) with switchable EQ curves

The Sutherland Engineering SUTZ, which appears to be a transimpedance head amp with no eq of its own but intended to feed into a MM stage which can be one with a variety of them would seem to be the answer. It does look like Sunderland don’t sell into Europe though as they list no agency here.

    Protractor for Naim Aro

I used one on my Townshend, without the trough, for years, the armrest was on a small block of wood blutaked to the deck. I used 212.5mm and a 17D.

    HiFi Engine site

I’ve not been able to log in for years. It’s a lost cause as far as I’m concerned.

Anti-static inner sleeves for vinyl after wet cleaning

Recently I’ve had inner sleeves from an outfit glorying in the name of Big Fudge. They do some similar to Nagaoka U shaped plastic ones but slightly thicker that still fit in a printed original inner and also mofi style ones, with arrows, to replace blank inners, I’d buy them again.

Sound quality of different electricity providers using tunemethod.

Tune Method? is that any more reliable than the Rhythm Method?

    When/what was peak cartridge?

It was increased sibilance that triggered me to retire it originally after 5 years as my sole cartridge. Originally on my Aro and then a couple of years on the Schröder reference. I’d take a guess at 3-5000 hours but I didn’t keep score.

    When/what was peak cartridge?

I’m not going to be much help to you there as I had a Gyger S put on the Proteus on a whim after enjoying the Royal N so much. The SPUs are a cure for a setup that sounds analytical, I’ve not managed that with either yet. The Protues with Gyger was good on the Schröder/Artemis/aluminium arm...

    When/what was peak cartridge?

My peak, pricewise, was a Transfiguration Proteus. After a couple of decades of 17D2s and a 3 it did everything the Karat did with added gravitas. When it wore out I went for an SPU Royal N on the assumption it would be different enough that I wouldn’t continually be comparing it unfavourably...

Rega speakers for Rega cd player/amp

I heard RS7s (I think, the 7 part definitely) ) on an Isis/Osiris setup run by Rega at my one time local Audio T. They were something of a limitation I thought. I was using Thiel CS1.6s on a Cursa/Maia at the time, Exons would have been better.

Recommendations for a bulletproof speaker placement method

Sumiko Masterset, it’s not fool proof and no good for boundary designs but I’ve found it useful for getting started. I found Herbie's gliders useful for making the fine adjustments, bare spikes not so much. Unlike the balance control you can have two off centre listeners with their own...

Roksan Nima - cartridge bolt size?

Dynavector used, and supplied, 2.6mm bolts with the 17/d2/3, a 2.5mm bolt would partially strip out the plastic threads in the cartridge body at a fairly low torque. Rather confusingly the brass bodied 17dx that replaced them uses 2.5mm as do their other cartridges (I didn’t check them all). The...
