WAV and AIFF generally are both uncompressed linear pcm. If you heard a difference they were almost certainly different mixes.
FLAC is desirable for a music collection as it's a losslessly compressed format. This means you'll be able to store more music without any quality loss.
They would be worth it more if they didn't lock down the hardware so much. Unfortunately the oldest of them are a windows xp embedded system without the ability to swap hardware or software.
I have had success with my NAD c 316bee, Naim 42/140(still not recapped), and Rega Brio. The Mite is far less fussy than the Hawk. Although the Hawk is known to be a pain to match.

I would suggest PSB speakers. I currently have a pair of alpha b1 on a 3.5w tube amp. I would stay away from totem unless you have some current from your amp.
I know I never liked the LS50. Perhaps it will be better with more power though. The cartridge loading should also be considered.
If he's got the Brio(2017) I would not expect it to be too flat sounding.
Again depending on what Brio it might actually be a step back.
