    Killer budget phono stage

I'm using the Tisbury with AT VM540ML. Rega P3 / Naim 112x / 150x / Intro 2. Not thinking of changing it any time soon.

Ideas for keeping hifi away from small kids!

Belt and braces for me. (Not literally!) Fenced off an area of the open-plan area that was the sprog's domain, floor covered with foam mats etc. Second system promoted to first system duties for a couple of years, with first system relegated to office upstairs (bolt on door). Once sprog slightly...

    Naim: Is it personal?

Upgrading completely optional though. I'm very happy with a modest setup which includes a pre and speakers most naimies wouldn't give the time of day ...

    Brennan

I have a JB7 bought, oh, must be at least ten years ago, when I had a job in London and was doing a weekly commute. Ripped my 700+ CDs and could listen to them in the week, via some small active PC speakers. So I was using it as a source. Sound was not at all bad. Tried it into the main system...

    Rega P3 sub platter

I'm using his subplatter and acrylic platter, and enjoying them. Good to deal with too.

    New vs old Rega 3

Is this in large part because of the relative masses of the components involved?

Buying a new CD player in 2023

My unhelpful initial gut feel answer would be: both. But, trying to be helpful, guess I'd say turntable is more fun, if you can stand the cost of new vinyl. Also, CD players perhaps more prone to going wrong, unto the point of becoming expensive door stops.

what was the first piece of hifi you bought

A Sharp RT12 cassette deck I think, or possibly a Sony TA-AX2 amp. Used with home-made speakers featuring surprisingly decent Audax woofers and tweeters. Actually I tell a lie - the amp and CD player were probably Christmas or birthday presents. In which case maybe first thing I bought was a...

Buying a new CD player in 2023

Getting up to change the CD or record might end up being the only thing standing between me and vascular dementia. Just sayin'. (As they say.)

    Naim NAC82 vs NAC72 - wifey’s blind audition result

I guess you should ask a grown-up to help you? :)

Van Damme Blue Series Speaker Cable

Good to see the old pre-emptive touchy move again. A classic forum tactic, pretending someone's reasonable response is an over-reaction to a provocation subsequently claimed to be an innocent remark. Nicely done sir.

Cheap amp - buy a used one from the 90’s or a new Chinese one?

Having just been looking at some copies of Hifi Choice from 1996 and 1999, I'd say your options could include NAD 314, Rotel RA920AX, 930AX or 971/ii, Cambridge Audio A500, or Sony TAF-B730R.

Is DAB dead and buried now

Trouble with FM is that a lot of tuners (most? all?) are badly affected by e-m emissions from computers. Which means I'm reduced to listening to DAB when working. Luckily R3 is one of the best DAB stations, in terms of bit rate etc.

    What's your WTF hifi moment

On the other hand I once made up several power cords, one using some uber-thick cable from a DIY store and one using an old PC power cable, both fitted with the same snazzy IEC plugs at the equipment end, and the former cable sounded disappointingly shite on one of my power amps, while the other...

    Phono stage ideas

So to follow up on intention to report back on the Tisbury Audio Domino... Tl;dr : it's damn good! At first it seemed a bit shut-in, tending towards dull even. But now, after a few weeks during which I've mostly left it on, and used it quite heavily, that sense has disappeared and instead I get...
