    LS3/5as and Low Frequencies

Maybe I have just got used to the sound of my AVI Neutron IVs but they don't sound thin at all to me. Admittedly I have a fairly smooth Creek 50A amp and also use a heavily modified Musical Fidelity X10D valve buffer. I have to site my Neutrons on bookcase shelves either side of a Victorian...

    Scott Walker

Surprised no one has mentioned the 1978 LP "Nite Flights"... ...I know it is technically a Walker Brothers album but even so the 4 Scott tracks are stunning:-

    HDCD Recommendations

I don't have a HDCD compatible CD player or DAC but I do have a lot of HDCD discs that I had ripped to Flac using EAC. I found this HDCD.EXE converter which takes a 16 bit HDCD wav file and converts it to a 24 bit file:- https://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=129136 I knocked up a dos batch...

    Birthday Cd's

My birthday is March 15th... ...I was in Oxfam Hertford recently and spied a mint copy of Love's Forever Changes 50th Anniversary set:- https://www.discogs.com/release/11821217-Love-Forever-Changes ...with 4CDs, an LP and a DVD in a hardback book presentation this seemed decent value for £35...

    Mojo magazines

I use to have the first 100 or so copies of Q Magazine... ...but my parents got fed up of storing them. I kept issues 1 - 10 but ditched the rest. Do mint copies of early Q fetch much?

    Mojo magazines

Many years since I bought a copy of Mojo. But was tempted to buy the latest copy by a decent cover mount CD "The North Will Rise Again" (stuff by ACR, Black Grape, Durutti Column, Peter Hook, Quando Quango, The Fall etc). The price has certainly gone up since I last bought a copy - £6.75...

    headphone suggestions

I was lucky enough to win a pair of HD650s in an online Hi-Fi forum competition circa 2008... ....used them every day since. In the last few months replaced the head band, cushions and cable. Like new now... ...with my Beresford Caiman SEG and Dorado PSU enhancer they sound remarkable!

Particularly appalling CD masters that don't come close to the vinyl

Looks like your US disc is from 1997 - so unlikely to have pre-emphasis. The last disc I have with pre-empasis is "Hats" by The Blue Nile (which was released in 1989). In the 1990s I had the John Westlake Cambridge Dacmagic which had a useful LED to indicate that pre-emphasis had been detected...

Particularly appalling CD masters that don't come close to the vinyl

Well the original certainly has DR (Dynamic Range):- https://dr.loudness-war.info/album/view/173645 DR=13 (much better than most modern discs). Also the original CD had pre-emphasis. A lot of CD players don't process pre-emphasis. If you play this disc on a machine which doesn't do...

    GoGo Penguin....

Gondwana artist Caoilfhionn (Keelin) Rose (and Durutti Column collaborator) is one of the best new artists of recent times:-

    Velvet Underground advice

I have an early third s/t CD which is the Valentin mix all the way through (check the CD matrix)... ...my Peel Slowly and See Box gives me the Closet mix. With the s/t third "Velvet Underground" album you have to be careful about you are listening to. A lot of CDs have Valentin mix for one...

    Velvet Underground advice

Given you have the Lou Reed Best Of... ...I'd start with "Loaded" (it sounds more like a Lou Reed album than any of the other VU albums). Then try the 1969 self-titled "Velvet Underground" album. If you are still liking what you hear try the 80s compilation CD "VU" (lots of great tracks not...

    Shit CD Packaging

As this thread is actually about CD packaging not Vinyl - how about my ultra rare sandpaper "Return Of The Durutti Column" CD:- Sadly James Nice of Factory Benelux did not have the services of Joy Division to stick on the sandpaper... ...James had to do them all by hand (a task he freely...

    100% Faultless Albums

These are all classics... ...apart from The The - who weirdly I never took too (wrongly I now know).

    Shit CD Packaging

My Public Image Limited - Metal Box CD... ...in a tin film cannister is tarnished (despite being kept in a damp free, non-smoking, pet free home)! Interestingly - my Popol Vuh "Soundtracks of Werner Herzog" CD set (in a much bigger tin film cannister)... ...is entirely untarnished:-...
