A pre-weekend bump for the ESL63S.
I'd consider a decent pre-amplifier as a swap, with cash either way depending on relative value. Probably not Naim though, given the need for DIN cables.
I’m putting my Quad ESL63s up for sale. I have owned these magnificent speakers since 2003, and they have genuinely transformed the way I listen to and understand music, and have been the foundation of many long listening sessions, deep into the night on occasion! Well recorded music can become...
This link does show what to expect to see through different telescopes, for various objects, but the UK weather can make observing frustrating and challenging. Have you thought about having a holiday in Spain or Portugal, in a place set up for astronomy - the equipment should be high quality and...
Just back from a trek to Ipswich to pick up the speakers, and have set them up temporarily to check that they are working OK;
So far, very good - they are quite different to the ESL63s behind them (!), and I think I am already hearing deeper into the mix - but I may be imagining that to...
Yes, I’m hoping that they are good. I must say that ATC have been extraordinarily helpful in giving me details of service work done once they know the serial numbers.
Thanks for the advice on cables, and for Alex’s offer - I will go and show some support to my nearest studio gear shop.
I have an incoming pair of actives speakers (ATC SCM 20-2), and will need to connect to them using an RCA - XLR cable. Any recommendations for a high quality, reasonable value cable, of 1.5 - 2m length? Is an RCA - XLR adapter, followed by an XLR cable, also a viable option?
Yes, I'm sure you're right, but it is good to know the costs of servicing and upgrades directly from ATC. By the way, it was ATC that mentioned possible reconing of the bass/mid drivers, and they also said that they those drivers might need to be replaced if they had developed any rust.
ATC have just given me some info - they date from November/December 2002, so are almost 21 years old. They mentioned that a full amp recap, reconing of bass/mid drivers, and replacement of tweeters should be expected at this stage. Could be expensive!
EDIT; ATC have kindly given an estimate for...
Looks like a clean pair of ATC SCM20-2;

I guess they must be about 18 or 19 years old, based on the serial numbers, and hence would probably benefit from a...
Thanks - that's very helpful.
We're looking at places in Guangdong that are not too far from Hong Kong, such as Zhongshan, where several of my wife's relatives already live. I'll have to sharpen up my mahjong play if we do it!
May I ask if you use your Irish passport for your Chinese visa because of any advice received on which passport to use?
I’m asking because I also hold UK and Irish passports, and am thinking seriously of living in China for the next few years (for family reasons).
