    Allen Boothroyd (Meridian) RIP

I enjoyed many lunches with him (plus to othe Meridian directors) at The Bridge Hotel Huntingdon. Impeccable manners, a true gentleman and effortlessly cool. All that and world class design talent.

The genius that was Douglas Adams

I sold him his system in his new home in Islington: Magnepan Tympany speakers 6' x 6' per side Micro Seiki CD player Linn with all the bits Audio Research's most advanced and, therefore most expensive amplification All the appropriate cables. £56k all in. One of the most decent celebrities I...

    Cheap, mains regeneration?

This is my precise experience. Avoid is my recommendation re UPS devices. Not much better with mains filtering either.

    craigslist london

Without exception, every single enquiry from me, offering to pay cash on collection has been ignored. eBay is far from perfect, but their feedback facility plus occasional support from PayPal (who always take the buyer’s point of view over the seller’s it seems to me) is an altogether more...

    Modern Accuphase amplifiers

Used a pre-owned E-405 for a couple of years. Astonishing build quality and a very inoffensive sound, a bit like tubes. Paid £1,400 and sold after 2 years for £1,350. Not untypical. Low depreciation when bought pre-owned. Never even heard of one going wrong, which is just as well 'cos the...

    What cd player?

I've just bought a brand new XTZ Mk2 for £395 inc vat. Not quite as musically vivid as my 2-box NorthStar at £4.4k - but not far behind. The HFW review was spot on. Slow to load though and curious function logic. Built to last. Bargain.

    Audio Research preamp advice

"For reference: when the SP9 came out was a disappointment to what ARC had made before (SP6, SP8 Mk1 & Mk 2, and the SP12). It got some mediocre reviews and was upgraded to MkII status with some revisions after about 12 months. Even then it never lived up to the performance of its predecessors...

Best arm for a Koetsu Rosewood ?

Yes, I can see how that might be. However, the very earliest SME/5 examples (I think i had one of the first 50 in the UK) were sonically different to those a few months later. In some cases, quite significantly so. That product was evolving in the light of advances in state-of-the-art phono...

Best arm for a Koetsu Rosewood ?

Damn. Yes - I forgot the Zeta. My notes from that time (I've just looked them up 'cos memory isn't what it used to be) indicate that it was good enough not to suggest a change of arm if the user already had one BUT ..... there was a then unresolved issue re slack bearings.

Best arm for a Koetsu Rosewood ?

Good afternoon members. I've been away, but this thread tempted me back. Anyway ..... having sold many kosher ones from Ricardo and avoiding the clever copies, I used mine on a Gyro with a Breuer 8-Dynamic arm for many years. That arm was hard to obtain and so I had to find alternatives for my...
