Worth moving from MC to MM to cheaply change phono styli more frequently?

Another point to note: Our award—winning medium-heavy mass WAND PLUS 9.5” tonearm is cheaper than almost all other top-flight arms and is an idyllic match with the big DENON DL-103 carts. VFM all round! 👍

Worth moving from MC to MM to cheaply change phono styli more frequently?

I was never committed to changing from MC to MM - I just thought it might be more affordable, on an ongoing replacement basis. This would in-turn allow me to affordably update styli more frequently, in an attempt to protect our beloved vinyl collection. It seems, that MM is no lower in cost, at...

I know people swear by them. I just wish I didn’t find the 1042 to be so downright ugly.

    Replacing Epos ES14s

REFERENCE3A DE CAPO are a somewhat similar design to your beloved ES14 - in a more modern configuration. Like the ES14, the little DA CAPOs have a real following. Might be worth exploring… ;)

Worth moving from MC to MM to cheaply change phono styli more frequently?

We’re in the J-FET camp, with our TRICHORD DELPHINI 2-box phono. We have the option of 47K loading for MM with either 100pF or 1,000pF - which I fear may NOT be low enough pF for some MM designs…

Andy, Am I correct in saying that our solid state phono stage should not add to the too-high pF problem?

@CageyH The DL-109 is a cart I don’t know at all. Does it offer home-fit replacement styli?

… but once again, for a replacement NAGAOKA MP-300 stylus, we are back to slightly more money than a brand new DENON DL103R. Around and around we go! o_O I’m starting to think that with big DENON DL-103R - or perhaps the original DL-103 - I’ve already hit the affordable sweet-spot. Maybe I’ll...

And for even cheaper running… The MP300 also looks nice!

A good reminder, Chris. My only MM options are 47K and 100pF/1,000pF… and our amp is all tube!

Had a SUMIKO BLUE POINT SPECIAL cart once. Horrible thing. I was quietly relieved when I accidentally damaged it. Then came the SHELTER 501/2! I have no experience with other SUMIKO carts.

@The Captain I’m with you, Capt. For me, truth of timber and dynamics are paramount. I suspect you are the same. After all, if a steel string acoustic guitar doesn’t sound like one - complete with resinous guitar body, and secondary harmonics, etc. - who cares if you can hear the guitarist...

I recall the legendary reputation of the GRACE F9E MM cart series. I imagine one can still purchase quality aftermarket styli for them but not sure how they would compete with similar modern offerings, today.
