    Lewisham / SE London

Billy Vee in Lewisham? They have done all the work that I couldn’t manage over the past thirty years or so.

    Headphone recommendations with mobile phone

I use Sony Z1R straight from the phone, and there is more volume than anyone sane could handle. Also, with any source they are the best sound I have ever heard, including my Focal Utopia.

Volumio vs Roon vs others for RPi

I’m using Ropieee with Roon and an Allo Digione Signature/RPi, streaming; Tidal, Qobuz and y own ripped files. I find Roon faultless and a real enhancement to my enjoyment of music. Ropieee is of course Free, and I found it incredibly simple to use as a complete novice.

Digital Coax cable with RCA plugs?

My original post was prompted by me putting together an Allo Digione Signature/RPi streamer which has BNC and RCA outputs. Allo insist that best results can be had using the BNC output.

Digital Coax cable with RCA plugs?

Digital transmission, say between network bridge/streamer and DAC, using spdif coax when the streamer or DAC does not have a BNC option is still recommended at 75 ohm impedance, (I assume due to the high frequency of the signal) and the market seems to have plenty of “digital” coax cables with...

Can undriven speakers in the room alter/spoil your sound?

Recording engineers have used speakers as microphones for years, particularly for high volume, low frequency sources, like bass drum. I don’t see how this would have any bearing on the sound in the room.

    Raspberry Pi Starter Kit

The OP suggests he wants the best option, not necessarily the cheapest. My first foray into RPi streaming was RPi 4 with an Allo Digione Signature hat and Ifi power supplies. Using Roon for Qobuz and Tidal via Roopie software. Setup was incredibly easy. I have spent many hours now comparing this...

    What’s up with today’s Hi-Fi journalists?

In the interests of balance, I should point out that “Connected” contains extracts of similar implausible “reviews” from; Hi-Fi+, Hi-Fi World, and Stereophile. I think it is shameful.

    What’s up with today’s Hi-Fi journalists?

Russ Andrews’ latest “Connected” comic landed on my doormat and provided me with a morning of hilarity, reminiscent of the time when it used to be the “Beano” which arrived instead. All good fun, but inside I find that the Hi-Fi journal “The Absolute Sound” has awarded the Russ Andrews Kimber...

Speaker Recommendations for Sugden A21a Power Amp.

Harbeth. I asked the (willing) dealer to bring them all along for a home demo. To my surprise, the cheaper 3 and 7 sounded best with the Sugden in my room. I bought both.

    Re-capping

The hum sounds very like a cap reforming. Also, problem doesn’t recur until a switch on when the amp is cold. I guess the best way may be to resolder them all then bridge each electrolytic cap in turn, but waiting for it to go cold for each test is going to be a pain.

    Re-capping

https://imgur.com/6KQoNQH O.k. clunky, but that link will show a picture. The hum channel is the bottom one in the pic, with a pair of electrolytics in front of the pot ( I have changed these again, in case I had a dodgy new one). All of the visible electrolytics have been changed.

    Re-capping

Thanks I have internal photos, but don’t know how to post here? I keep them on iCloud. It is a “Fischer In-Ear Amp 2” which is a stage monitor amp for iem. Looks quite a simple circuit, but I don’t have schematic. It has a simple three channel mixer, and the hum is on one input only, and hum is...

    Re-capping

Loud hum builds quickly at switch-on, then fades away after about 30 seconds, then amp woks fine (solid-state headphone amp. I changed the reservoir electrolytics, but no better. Any ideas?

One for the Naim experts: Logo and display bleed?

Naim replaced the bleeding logos on FOUR of my amps and power supplies free of charge, but only when they were in for other work
