Books that don't exist that really need to...

I've always thought someone should write a book about the worst excesses of hi-fi eccentricity and obsession.

[Poll] Music: Rent or Buy? (2018)

I buy, and buy only from small independent sources, in -person when I can. I'm on a Quixotic mission to avoid the big tech companies. This is partly because I don't like their bullying, no-tax business models, but also because I am increasingly uncomfortable with every aspect of my daily...

Name the best speakers you have EVER heard please

It's very hard to isolate one component. I suspect "the best speakers you've heard" == "the best system you've heard". With that in mind, I think so far, the best I've heard were the Avantgarde Trios, with all the bass gubbins. Though I've also heard the Trios sound lousy. Also got blown away...

    Linn Lingo 4

That's going to be pages and pages of them politely arguing about which shelf it sounds best on. I'm not joking.

Stuff you can't have for aesthetic reasons

I've always wanted a Wilson Benesch Torus. They're not ugly things, but they're big. And shiny. If I lived on my own, I'd probably put up with it, but I can't inflict it on others. As someone else said: "it's like having the back wheel off an F1 car in the living room"

    Favourite High End Headphone Amplifier?

    I've got a Luxman P1u, and it's beautiful.

    Arcam Delta 250 CD Transport

I had one of these years ago. It was pretty good. Played anything, pretty solidly put together. I ran it with a Black Box, and it was a very nice player. I'm not a massive believer in the importance of the transport though. I'd be a little wary of anything of this age, because CD mechanisms...

Santa bought me a Raspberry Pi - How shall I do what with it?

I think the standard use for a pi, at least one more than a couple of weeks old, is taking up a small amount of space in the back of a drawer.

Has pop music lost its fun? - BBC Music

Pure pop music's kind of gone underground hasn't it? Everyone got "too cool" for it a few years ago, when R&B took its place in the mainstream charts. I'm not surprised if self-centred complaining is more popular in music today, because it sure as heck seems more popular in every other walk of...

    Headphones only?

For a couple of months this year, due to amp repairs and upgrades, all my listening was through 'phones. I found that the HD800/Lehmann setup I'd always found quite satisfactory, wasn't up to the job of being my only source. Listening more, and more seriously, I started finding faults that...

    New LP12

Beware the upgrade path. At first I saw it as a Good Thing, but it ended up being the reason I started looking around for a different deck. I got to a point where I couldn't enjoy it: always thinking "this could be better, this SHOULD be better!", and always worrying that maybe the suspension...

    New LP12

I remember, some years ago, a dealer telling me the only new LP12s they ever sold were insurance jobs.

    Unison Research Hybrid amplifiers

I really like them, and I've long flirted with the idea of having one of the better integrateds. My power amp (Linear A) is a hybrid, but it's got pretty much nothing in common with the Unisons I've heard.

What difference does using a good transport make when paired with a quality dac?

I had a bunch of transports, and the most expensive one was definitely the best. I loved the build, the finish, the way the drawer closed, the way the buttons clicked, the way it looked, the calm solid expensiveness the thing exuded. Putting a CD on was a pleasure every time. It didn't *sound*...
