    Oldie – PFM member

Thanks everyone. Arthur was 72. Considering that he began posting on the Naim forum over 20 years ago, he adopted the name Oldie when he was only just around 50, which was a little misleading. Arthur was one of these old guys like your dad that knew how to do everything and had a garage full...

    Oldie – PFM member

Oldie, of this parish (Arthur), was diagnosed with cancer this summer. When it became clear that this wasn’t going to get any better and we got to the hospice stage, he asked me to post here on PFM so that those that knew him would understand why he wasn’t on here any longer talking bollocks...

    Improving Macbook -> Hugo?

New Macs have dropped the optical out doubled into the headphone sockets, but buy an Airport Express from eBay for £20 (A1264) and feed optical out (3.5mm audio out is also Toslink out) from that instead. Makes it wireless too, so a win-win.

    Old Grey Whistle Test

I thought it was all very lukewarm. For me, the only good thing was the bloke at the end (Robert Vincent), whose new album I''ll Make The Most Of My Sins is flipping' brilliant Everything else I found a bit of a cringe, and as far as Gary Numan is concerned, there's nothing worse than a 60 year...

    Angle Audio Phono Stage

I used one for a year, a Discrete VB moving coil. The virtual battery makes it extremely quiet, which makes it a shock upgrading to my current Trilogy 906, which does hum a bit. Before buying the Angle I auditioned several phono stages over quite a long time and found the Angle to beat...

Please suggest a phono stage for Avondale Grad1

That's a pretty good illustration of just why I don't know anything other than what I read and then completely misunderstand. Interesting stuff. Thanks for the correction. I think I've been looking into it a bit too hard and probably read this and got the wrong idea...

Please suggest a phono stage for Avondale Grad1

I hope this isn't too boring, but; I haven’t been on PFM for years now, but I take a peek and see what is going on very occasionally, and as I have spent last year trying various phono stages I thought I could post my findings here. It may be of interest, it may not, but I see that phono...

    I am becoming a woman

I haven’t been here for a very long time, but I heard it mentioned and thought I’d pop in to say how courageous it is to accept the inevitable and become someone else; yourself, ironically, and how admirable it is that you are doing this. Living in Brighton, it’s not unusual, but it’s no less...

Which three albums do you use to evaluate hifi equipment?

Isn't that the philosophy of radio compression - to make any old crap sound good, because it's squeezed? Which I suppose suggests that the better the hi-fi, the crappier the sound. Okay, I need to rethink this.

Non run- flat tyre pressures on a car that came with run flats

Starting off point is the same pressure. The run-flat feature is only in the collapsed state of the shell, requiring the wall to take the load, but the tyre will be exactly the same when fully inflated. The only difference from that point is personal taste and how that applies to the...

Betting is not good. We should all take a break from this and put things into perspective. Like when the country in WWII came together in a collective and mutually-respective cause, I find a trip to Ikea works wonders. Everyone comes home at the end of it in mutual despair that makes...

It could be like the Walking Dead; you could put him in a field enclosure with members of the Caravanning Club Of Great Britain and the Morris Marina owners club. Clarkson would be standing at the centre with a decreasing circle of beige descending on him until he was completely engulfed.

I'm at the point where because of all this Clarkson overload, I now couldn't care less if there is a TG in the future or not. It's become a bore.

I think it's over. I very much doubt we'll see another Top Gear. The BBC have stupidly thrown the baby out with the bathwater and too much damage is now done to come back.

Between series, I doubt anyone would notice. Honestly.
