It's called thermal solar heating. the panels contain a chemical (a better heat conductor than water) that then travels through a coil in the hot water cylinder thus heating your water.
I think you'd both be surprised how little sun you need to heat the water fully up to temperature with thermal solar panels as I do here in so sunny London.
We have an all electric hot water cylinder attached to a couple of thermal solar panels on the roof. I often go through the summer months without hardly ever having to use the electric side.

Yikes what have I done. I've got a Marshall 100W super bass head that's sat unused for the last 40 years at the back of my photographic studio and irrationally decided it would be nice if it sat on something so I bought a second hand Marshall 4 X 12 bass cab.
