What concert have you last been to #3

A violin and piano recital in Dunrobin Castle's music room. Alas, we don't get enough music up here in the far north. I've been around the world for concerts and operas, but this is one of the most beautiful venues I've ever been to, and it's right on my doorstep.

    Where to buy vinyl

Lots of job lots on an internet auction site. Be patient, there's no shortage. But when a lot has stuff you want, be prepared to pay for it. But as previously mentioned, letting others know you're a vinyl guy is essential. I've often been given very nice little collections of albums just...

    Wagner's Ring on Blu-Ray?

Here's what I think after Das Rheingold: Firstly, it's good to have a Ring with modern sound and video quality, most Ring DVDs don't! Concerning the sound - the singers are personally mic'd I believe, and this gave the post-production the opportunity to get their preferred balance... which is...

    expanding my opera "collection"

I don't know if Thomas K is still expanding his opera collection, but this was such a fine thread I thought I'd give it a bump. In answer to the original post (specifically enjoying operas on record), it's all about that great side of vinyl, where the needle drops and you sit back to 20-30 mins...

What are you listening to right now # 39

Modern: Laura Marling - Once I Was An Eagle. (Her best, and one of the best this year.) Classical: Going through an LP box set of Schubert symphonies. Always engaging and worth hearing.

What concert have you last been to #3

Mahler's 4th Symphony (a favourite of mine), in a chamber ensemble arrangement. Near to where I live in the Highlands. The semi-pro orchestra struggled during the tricky passage of the 2nd and 3rd movements. His symphonies are like journeys and when the orchestra mis-steps it really takes...

Sharon Jones has cancer. get well soon.

Sorry to hear this. I was looking forward to seeing her at the End of the Road festival in August. Hope she'll be healthy and back on stage soon.

    Deutsche Grammophon making vinyl again!

You're right of course. I don't suppose anyone really regards it as a step forward. However, it sure would be wonderful to get Anarchy in the UK on a 78 :-)

    Deutsche Grammophon making vinyl again!

Agree, although both have their plus points. I have a choice of 7 on the shelf, but with its superior recording the Janowski is the one I prefer for general listening. God knows how much a new ring cycle recording would cost on LP!

    Deutsche Grammophon making vinyl again!

Duh-uh! Because vinyl sounds a million times better. :D But, yeah, the pricing for regular purchases will test most wallets. It's nice of them to give the option though.

    Deutsche Grammophon making vinyl again!

Interesting. As someone with about 6 shelfspace feet of wagner vinyl I'm not sure if I'd be tempted by a £64 best of set. Aside from this one, which won't tempt me (who am I kidding!), if the quality of their pressings and packaging was good, I reckon there is a decent market. Deutsche...

    Best Singer/Songwriter

Yes, In my opinion the mark of a great songwriter is that other artists sing and record your songs.

    Best Singer/Songwriter

This really doesn't disappoint me. As I share my favourite composer with Hitler, I'm used to this sort of thing. To be put off something just because a politician likes something is just plain silly. Lots of fantastic human beings also like Gillian Welch (and Wagner too). As for your...

    Best Singer/Songwriter

Yep, Gillian Welch has made some excellent albums, and Time The Revelator is a modern classic. I really should check out David Sylvian to see what he's up to.
