The watch thread: pocket, wrist, sporty, showy? You name it!

I'm sure there is that, of course. But it is also being afraid to wear "my watch" outside of the home in general, even when going for a walk alone or taking the car to put some petrol in and check the tyres, or to the supermarket. Before it was stolen I used to wear my 40-year-old, plain steel...

The watch thread: pocket, wrist, sporty, showy? You name it!

My remark may have been ill-judged, but it was made to underline, taking the logic to its absurd extreme, that one cannot establish a kind of moral (and moral according to whom?) "tolerance" to violent crime, and crime in general. It is a bit like saying it is OK to beat up a kid with a 1000...

This was in The Guardian: Thefts from the person – which includes muggings, bag-snatches and mobile phone theft – in the City of Westminster, which includes Mayfair, rose by 40% last year to 25,650, while in London they rose 27%. There were 72.4 reported thefts from the person per 1,000 people...

I've been searching for statistics, but it seems all a bit vague. In the Daily Mirror (or was it Mail?) I found this: "London's street crime epidemic last year saw theft from a person offences soar by 27 per cent compared to the previous 12 months. Metropolitan Police figures show there were...

I may be remembering wrong, it would not be unusual. Apologies.

Well I had mine nicked in Rome a couple of years ago (fortunately by cunning rather than violence). It can happen anywhere. But 22,000 a year in London!? And foreigners tend to think of London as an orderly, civilised city. Not Lagos or Rio de Janeiro.

The watch thread: pocket, wrist, sporty, showy? You name it!

The other day some Italian friends told me they had decided not to visit London because of the reports of violent thefts. So all this is not just damaging people with expensive watches, but the entire tourist industry.

Should they also have higher priorities than solving thefts of cars worth more than 30K, or burglaries in homes worth more than 500K? Is it morally "sort of OK" for criminals to steal, with personal violence, something that someone or other considers a "luxury"? Where do you draw the line? There...

Credit Swiss management to pay back public emergency funds.

Really!? So the whole story is nonsense? Strange that Reuters would make a mistake like that.

If I were you I would try and not wear specs for as many activities as possible, and then concentrate on what you need specifically. I don't think any kind of "varifocals" can be an all-round solution. Also, some people just do not tolerate them and find themselves adopting strange postures to...

Credit Swiss management to pay back public emergency funds.

ZURICH (Reuters) - Switzerland's lower house of parliament late on Wednesday clearly passed a motion to make senior management of a major bank return half their income over the previous decade if the lender has to be rescued with public money. The measure, which still needs to be debated in the...

The Rise of the Far Right

What I meant was that with a FPTP system like in the UK, Wilders might have won a majority to govern. But I haven't done any sums and it may be impossible to do so. But with PR he won 37 out of 150 seats. since his was the most-voted party, In a FPTP system of 150 constituencies, he could well...

The Rise of the Far Right

One example in favour of some form of proportional representation. I wonder if in the UK he might not have won.
