    Chord Qutest question ...

That's interesting as I found it forward, bright and synthetic sounding, literally couldn't stand listening to it after I'd got over the initial impressive level of detail and speed. I don't remember seeing any reviews that called it relaxed sounding - I think Chord themselves called it...

    Using interconnects for digital

In my experience many analogue RCA cables aren't 75ohm for the cable itself, never mind the connectors, and there's no reason for them to be. A "digital" RCA cable should be 75ohm coax but analogue cables are often shielded twisted pair construction which is more like 100ohms. Whilst a non 75ohm...

Naim Supernait 1 re-cap...what other components can be upgraded?

I'm intrigued by the schematics for the power amp sections. I was vaguely aware that the Supernait 3 had fully complementary output stages in Sziklai configuration but didn't realise that this started with Supernait 1 and that the Nait XS and NAP100 also followed suit. Quite an evolution...

The best audio system on earth?

I'm really intrigued as to what the "speed" control is on the DAC. I read a review of the Wadax product which did briefly mention it but I'm none the wiser. It talking about bass speed and timing but I can't imagine what technical aspect it could be adjusting in a DAC to influence this and...

The best audio system on earth?

Don't forget too, the one that fits in your room.... The majority of those hi-end systems with 8ft tall speakers and power amps on their own pallets just make me cringe, you'd need a mansion to fit them in. Those slim, tall Danish ones in the second room make me ask Why would you do that? Ugly...

    Naim Prices?

I think the issue here is that Class D is inherently cheaper than class A or A/B amps. Class A/B with high output levels need large transformers, large filter capacitors and multiple output devices which all need large casework. There is an inherent cost in this. You can buy well reviewed 200W...

I tend to agree - silver adds a "sheen" and excess focus on detail to the signal. I suspect part of the reason it doesn't sound right (to my ears at least) is that studios mostly use copper cables and therefore music is mixed and EQ'd to sound "right" with copper cables.

    Cassette Deck.

Personally I still often prefer a cassette copy to the original.

    Naim Nait 50

I just started watching the Steve Guttenberg video and my jaw hit the floor when he mentioned the price! That's £2,700 of your English pounds. That's £1,200 more than the Nait 5si and £200 more than the Nait XS3, both of which have more power, more inputs and remote control. Maybe they'll bring...

Bristol Hifi Show 24to to 26th Feb 2023

Another room I liked which I forgot to mention and no-one else has yet was the Coppice Audio/Air Audio room on the 4th floor. A nice pair of their solid wood cabinet X1's were playing and sounded sublime with some Ben Webster sax playing on vinyl. It was also a Hana cart demo and there was an...

Bristol Hifi Show 24to to 26th Feb 2023

I'm not sure if it was deliberate or not, but I missed/avoided listening to the new Naim 200. I did pop into the other Naim room which was playing their largest all-in-one box into a pair or large lower-end multi driver Focals and didn't like it at all. One of the many rooms with far too much...

Bristol Hifi Show 24to to 26th Feb 2023

They were well out into the room to be fair, but it was one of the smallish rooms on the 4th floor. Just had a look at a pic I took with my phone - looks like they had at least 1metre free space behind them. I only went in the room as I heard some seismic bass coming from somewhere. I initially...

Bristol Hifi Show 24to to 26th Feb 2023

Just got back from the show after a 3 hour drive each way! Glad I went on the Friday now as it wasn't as busy as the previous couple of times I've been many years ago. Highlights of the show sound wise for me were, in no particular order: Leema acoustics electronics running a smallish pair of...

So Good... I built it twice!

As an experiment this evening I tried moving the gnd return point from the OM2.7's from the "output" end of the Hackercaps to the "input"/rectifier end. To be honest I wasn't expecting much, if any, difference but to my surprise I was wrong... The sound changed quite significantly and was...

So Good... I built it twice!

So, I managed to get the paralleled output transistor mods done this weekend. I used matched pairs to get best current sharing, although i found all the devices I had were very similar anyway so it probably wasn't needed. I was only impressed by how closely the NPN and PNP output devices HFEs...
