Integrated amp suggestions under £1k - new or used.

You can get some amazing amps secondhand for very little money. I inherited a reconditioned (by Naim) 52/supercap/250 and for financial reasons I decided to sell it. I bought a new NAD 320BEE for 200 notes and to my amazement I preferred it to the Naim!! The NAD has a bit of a cult following so...

£1200 system - what to go for?

Haven't read whole thread so may be repeating a previous post. The high-end Cambridge Azur range is absurdly good, and wonderful value second hand. This would leave plenty of budget for decent speakers, even a slightly tatty pair of Yamaha NS1000Ms. Nic P

Is a pro-audio sub a bad idea for music?

I would go for something like the budget REL that was sold under the brand name Tsunami. They will be on sale for peanuts, have a good amp in-built and decent set up via a remote for volume and roll-off point. They work well on both music and AV (you can store 4 settings). This will allow you...

    Silver cable

A friend as an experiment bought some high quality (not audiophile) cables, expensive IEC plugs, and good 13 amp plugs. He eventually found a combination that to his and my ears sounded usefully better than stock cables, for a fraction of the price of audiophool cables. Nic P

It’s about time we had another cable thread.

IIRC digital interconnects have been measured by one of the HiFi mags and the expensive cables generally introduced much less jitter. It therefore seems very likely that analogue interconnects introduce different time domain distortions. Whether these time domain differences are audible can only...

Nice to read a post I strongly agree with. I think your view would be widely supported by those who have probably wanted to avoid this sort of thread. I am sure many of the posters on this thread will think we need to be sent for retraining. Nic P

If I had a pound for every idiot who said that double blind tests have been used so my results are valid I would be a rich man. Design of valid experiments and design of the analysis of the data from experiments is VERY complex. It wasn't taught in University courses and I suspect still isn't...

It works well for me. There is in my (expert*) opinion no way of avoiding any expectation bias. I don't want new equipment to sound better, I am just deciding on how to spend my money to give me more listening pleasure. New equipment frequently fails my test, so this supports my view that my...

I listen to the new piece of equipment or cable for a week and then swap back for a week, and then swap back again and decide if there is any improvement, and if there is whether it is worth the investment. Nic P

For me the revelation about cables came after a friend bought a high end pair of speaker cables for his system. He let me try the and they totally wrecked the sound of my system. I have found cables that work well in my system, all bought off eBay for sensible money. Would never pay big money...

At least they are trying to understand what they hypothesise might be causing audible effects in cables. Interesting that they think time domain distortions are significant. Nic P

    Second/spare hi-fi systems.

Interesting thread. We listen to our second system (equipment in the study, with loudspeakers in the kitchen) for about 3 hours a day, whereas the lounge system probably only averages 30 mins a day. We have just bought a pair of Chario speakers from MAX which retailed at nearly £2000 (Jon...

    In praise of dealers

Since I retired 10 years ago much of equipment has been purchased second hand from the Internet. However when we bought a replacement CDP for our second system we purchased a new Rega Apollo-R from Jon at MAX (delighted with it). When visiting Jon we heard a pair of Chario bookshelf speakers...
