Is our world becoming more cruel?

The case of cruelty in Hitler's Germany may just have resulted from his tapping into strong and deep rooted anti-Jewish sentiments in European culture. Something was rotten about the culture which led to something rotten about the people, which Hitler exploited. The reason I'm suggesting that...

Is our world becoming more cruel?

By nature maybe. My point is that the role of nurture is to form people so they are less cruel, so their cruel dispositions are suppressed. And I would argue that our way of bringing people up has demonstrably failed. I'm not saying that other cultures have been totally successful -- but I don't...

Is our world becoming more cruel?

I think that the word arsehole isn't quite right for, let's say, the low ranking Germans who managed the day to day cruelty at Belsen. To say someone's an arsehole is to say that they are stupid, irritating, or contemptible. These ordinary people behaved in an evil way.

Is our world becoming more cruel?

I'm no historian, but I think the Holocaust was particularly cruel, maybe the cruellest event ever for all I know. One of the main functions of culture is to make people civilised. By culture I mean the values and attitudes which are learned in school and at home. That word some covers a...

Is our world becoming more cruel?

I think the Western way of forming people -- values, culture -- is not very good at stopping them from behaving cruelly. This is for me the most difficult lesson of Hitler's concentration camps, which happened in the land of Luther, Bach and Kant.

    Leak ST 20 into BC1s

With my SP1 - which I think is just a BC1 modified slightly - there's some debate about this, on this site. Some say they had success, others say they much prefer transistor amps. It's not a question of volume, it's a question of detail and image. I tried it with my Radford STA 25 and decided it...

    War declared, Israel v Palestine...

Some of them may only be mildly concerned maybe - they may see it as an unfortunate consequence of a necessary and legal and moral battle being waged by Israel. I think I have asked @PaulMB this question before - if I did, I didn't see his answer. At what point will you say that so many innocent...

    Active Crossovers, anyone dabbled?

Do any of these have a control to adjust the timing? I have an active crossover for ESLs and passive subwoofers with a timer alignment control - I've learned it can really matter. The Sublime Acoustics product in the OP doesn't - it may work well enough for you, you may get a coherent enough...

Radford Revival STA25 Renaissance Valve Amplifier...

It's good that it's got an easy way of checking and regulating the bias. I wish mine had that! However, there's something lovely about seeing the valves glow like candles in the original version. I've often thought of creating a high plinth for mine so I could relish the light effect.

    War declared, Israel v Palestine...

Well part of what Israel represents in the area is this: it is the state which has ruined the lives of generations of Palestinian people.

\Just this - maybe others will read it differently, that'd be interesting.
