I have this working on my buffalo and your set up sounds pretty much right to me (i swapped the resistor same as you have). Which switch position are you using for I2S? IIRC the manual advises position 1 or 4 (mine is working in position 1)

True. I think the most valid issue with classic naim gear relates to speaker cable. The power amps lack output inductors and can become unstable if incorrect cable is used.

The point I'm trying to make is that there maybe no need for a pre amp if the dac is the only source.

In my experience it wasn't a problem with a buffalo dac with volume control. It sounded better without the naim pre amp than with. I think the matching issue has something to do with input impedance. Someone else with more knowledge will have to explain.

If a remote is needed, maybe an mdac directly into the nap 180? I haven't heard the mdac but I would still question the need for a pre amp if you don't have a turntable. I also own a nac32.5 with 821a and a psu and they are superb. However I found my dac straight into the power amp sounded...

If you are digital only, do you even a pre amp? If the caiman has volume control, it can run directly into the nap 180 with a din to rca lead. Not only will you save money and shelf space, it will arguably sound better. I did this with my bufallo dac for a while when I had 180.
