    The Week

Don't listen to the naysayers. It's a great publication, and despite it's conservative audience (judging from the adverts), I've never had the sense that it is anything other than balanced. Have subscribed for years and wish the same existed here in Germany.

    RIP - Tom Wolfe

Chapter3 of The Right Stuff is simply wonderful. Will reread again tonight in tribute.

BBC Red Ape: Saving The Orangutan

Some interesting links: http://www.greenpeace.de/files/publications/20160303_greenpeace_indonesien_palmscorecard.pdf http://palmoilscorecard.panda.org/ Was about to stop eating Nutella (the only product I eat that contains palm oil), but it seems they're OK.

    PROMS 2018- programme is out!

Prom 12 sounds perfect for my kids' first prom. (Will probably go to Mahler 8 the night before) Yes, if I were still in London then... Mahler 3 with Boston would be worth attending.

    Wagner Wesendonck lieder

I must confess it's been years since I listened to them, but will hear them soon in concert, admittedly only with piano quartet: https://www.konzerthaus.de/en/programm/ein-abend-mit-annette-dasch/2140 I guess when one thinks of Wagner, one only thinks of the operas. PS For those that don't have...

Hey now, hey now, the DSDream is over

Have you tried using foobar to play your DSD files? Plays them perfectly and can re-sample to FLAC on the fly, should you want. It's also free and has loads of settings, should you be a tinkerer.

Hey now, hey now, the DSDream is over

Being somewhat tangential: I had a similar moment not long ago. For the bast 8 or so years I've been obsessing about SACDs and DSD. I had a Sony 5400ES (whose mechanism was noisy), then bought a TEAC DSD DAC to play some downloads as well as ripped SACDs. Last spring I upgraded to a Luxman SACD...

Wagner Ring Solti Decca CD masterings

I reckon this is an urban myth, probably put about by one person trying to flog some older versions. It's remarkable how quickly such things can spread. What I have read (in Stereophile https://www.stereophile.com/content/solti-iringi-remasteredagain) is that the last transfer at 24/48 was the...

    Kawai Pianos?

I'm afraid there's probably very little you can do if the piano sounds unpleasant, that is assuming it's been tuned and prepared properly. Of course if, like in the Wigmore, there is a lot of marble on the wall, or maybe a lot of glass, then this could make the sound much worse, but I doubt...

    Classical intrumental Guidance please

A message from pedant's corner: in the classical music world, instrumental usually means a single instrument, rather than no-singing. Classical music (especially in shops) is usually divided thus: • Concertos/concerti: one instrument as soloist with an orchestra or larger group of instruments...

    Ebayers and audio

Same here, though I have once been asked for my permission. I've had some nice interactions selling stuff on ebay, though even nicer using audio-markt.de, where there are pretty much only enthusiasts and shops.

Hi resolution audio discs - suggested player help, please.

An advantage of the 103/105 over the 203/205 is that, should one want to, one can rip SACDs.

What do electrical engineers know that many audiophiles do not?

@ TonyL The audiophile hotseat is not necessarily where one might imagine, and changes from hall to hall. In the Konzerthaus in Berlin the best seats are the first gallery, side seating, first row! In the Philharmonie they're probably in Block B about half way back, but centre. I found the back...

    Stereophile visit PS Audio

It's a pity it was a Saturday -- there's something alive about a buzzing factory (eg MF's Rega and Audio Research visits).
