    Longer mains leads

Agreed - but you'd be surprised what a difference a change of power lead does make to the sound you hear. - Improvements in supply circuit cabling (in this direction) bring even greater returns, as all my many customers (and a prominent Audio dealer chain) will attest.

    Longer mains leads

If you're in to making your own, I'd suggest 2.5mm csa 3-core SY cable with the screen connected to earth in the plug. - Should work nicely.

Reservoir Caps - NCC/Naim -series Amps

I've just replaced the caps in the power supplies of my NCC220 (complimentary) amps - Moved from Panasonic TS-UP to Samwha HC series and the difference is not subtle. What brought me to this was the disassembly of a (dead) high-end Arcam AVR600 amp/receiver - This 2k+ unit had Samwha HC caps as...

    Modifying NCC200 boards

Interesting reading. As an aside, the best caps I've found so far for DIY are the Samwha HC series (as used by Arcam in thier hi-end gear) - well worth checking out; major upgrade in imaging and clarity. - Forgot to clarify - these are reservoir caps - go for the 63-80V versions.

    Best output devices for NCC200

I don't think there is a requirement for additional 100R resistors if you're using dual output devices here. From my experience (recently) the TO-3 devices MJ15003 (and Mj15004 if you're going complimentary) give a greater sense of vitality and clarity to the sound than the TO-247 alternatives...

QUDOS - the brilliant new amplifier boards from Avondale

As Mega Lord says, it's quite possible and the results are well worth it.

    Rail voltages for NCCXXX?

Regardless of the sonic benefits of running the rails at around +/-50VDC, one thing I've noticed recently on my NCC220 clones is that the ZTX653 transistors run [really]quite hot at 50V, much less so at 35-40V... I would add though that these devices (like most modern semi's) can run happily up...

Which volume control method and brand

If you feel the urge to visit the dark side via an analogue good value pot, i'd look at these... Love 'em ! https://secure.reichelt.com/gb/en/alps-rotary-potentiometer-high-end-6-mm-stereo-10-k-rk27112-log10k-p73833.html? - Just sayin'

    Flat blade screwdrivers

May I suggest PB Swiss Tools screwdrivers? They have parallel blades and are thoroughly recommended. I run an electrical engineering company and we've been using PB for year. Nothing else comes close. www.pbswisstools.co.uk Regards, Lee

    NCC200 , Hackernap, Voyagers

Interesting thread this one! I've gone the other way - after having NCC200's and modifying to regulate the front end (and feeling that somewhere along the line some coherence got lost) decided to try the HackerNap project... Built 5 boards up with highest-spec components complete with...

    Dedicated mains spur

SY is suitably rated and is fine for connection to mains. - That's what it's made for.. I've not tried split-concentric cables i'm afraid. The copper strands in SY are much finer than solid or stranded T&E cables. SY is deemed a 'flexible cable' and is therefore constructed as such. I've tried...

    Dedicated mains spur

Hi Axis, As long as the SY is not buried in the ground and is supported adequately throughout it's length, it may still be a compliant option. Regards, Lee

    Dedicated mains spur

SWA cable is not really much good for indoor Audio/HT supply. I've been installing dedicated HiFi supplies for years and the best (widely available) cable I've come across to date is 3-core SY control cable. - The screen (not really an armour) is earthed at the supply end and effectively keeps...

    ProAc Response 1SC

I'd second this. Many speakers respond well to modification however ProAc's, which are pretty well sorted and optimised, don't. As has been already said, good solid high-mass stands are the best bet with these. Regards

Recommendations for a good sounding Home Cinema amp?

+1 for ONKYO. Good performance for the money.
