    Bo Diddley RIP

    Derek Bailey

Yeah. My favorite so far; I love how surreal and totally emphatic it is. And that great smelly, warm recording like it was restored from mangled tape. Bonus points for the performance being drowned out halfway through by rain thundering down on the roof!

    Derek Bailey

Two 55 minute episodes of Derek's 1992 TV documentary on improvisation, On the Edge, can be watched here: http://www.ubu.com/film/bailey.html He had a cracking voiceover voice.

What music are you 'actually' playing now? (see below for details!)

Stratting about, I've given up trying to play tunes and whatnot; I just can't do it. So I'm working on my Derek Bailey/Pops Staples hybrid fusion style. Having just taken delivery of a Roland Micro Cube (thanks Tony), I'm learning synchronise my guitar playing to me counting to 4 and 7, having...

    Derek Bailey

Mad video of Min Tanaka dancing to Derek's guitar improv. I quite like it. I can barely play guitar, but I've always found doing a bit pinging improv refreshing and uplifting.

    Derek Bailey

*quite likes the Derek Bailey drum 'n' bass record* The genre's super old hat now, but I think his heavy metal playing's quite energized by the silly idea of free improvising to a tape of a drum loop. And his fractured, stark guitar over the warm, smooth loops is just...well, nice. He was...

    Crooners

I'm no expert, but most crooning's too claustrophobic and airless. Regardless, you can't be without this album.

    Surf guitar (etc.)

Also, if your idea of surf includes Beach Boys type groovy California pop, you can't be without this: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000UNYPN0/?tag=pinkfishmedia-20

The best Dick Dale album I know of is Tribal Thunder, from around 1994. A very loud, angry, clean, doom-laden record. Amazing recording too. It also features a fantastic smoky acoustic version of the Pulp Fiction theme.

pfm Picture A Week (PAW) 2008 part II

Vuk, thanks for the feedback. As far as cropping goes, it's the halo that makes the angel. Borders need dither not to be brutal. As for the number of objects in the frame, my imagined ideal Kit-esque photo is a soft, low impact affair the eye can comfortably wander around in. I dislike high...

    The final contenders

The Fuji compacts are advertised as having exceptionally low noise, which would tempt me. My ancient Nikon Coolpix (rocking 16 megs of memory) covers anything dark in purple and green splodges. And while noise isn't too awful a thing, but visible noise reduction is fouler than foul.

Thou shalt not make repetitive generic music

I like the "Some people are just nice" line and the way the it breaks the flow up a little. And a jewish-looking rapper always earns you cool points.

pfm Picture A Week (PAW) 2008 part II

Like that first one, Richard. The lines are well spotted; I must reevaluate my appraisal of nature as "shit." Jason's bike also very good. Distinctive, strong emotion. Maybe a tinge less saturation would work?

Recommend me some Raw Classic Country

Lovely little documentary on the Louvin Brothers on that YouTube. Lots of other good stuff, eg how brilliant is this? I'd forgotten about all that great mandolin!

Recommend me some Raw Classic Country

Try When I Stop Dreaming: The Best of the Louvin Brothers. Raw Christian & secular country pop from the 50s/early 60s, with lots of lovely telecaster. Ira Louvin was very religious, and also a raging alcoholic. He died with several outstanding warrants for driving under the influence, in a car...
