If I was going to do a 2.5 week visit, staying in basic hotels and doing day trips, all as you suggest, would you be able to guesstimate what I should budget excluding flights?
Many thanks @paulfromcamden and @artless for your advice - I'm really feeling inspired to do it by rail now and have a few different bases. This sounds absolutely ideal as it will also allow us to go as off the beaten track as we choose without lugging a backpack around on a daily basis.
I've wanted to visit Japan as long as I can remember but not made it yet. I'm hoping to visit with my son who is going to learn the language.
I'm wondering if an organised tour or travelling independently would be best for a first visit? Would appreciate any thoughts on this.

I love mine. Very wide stereo image with lots of air and seperation. Sound great with a mobile and dongle DAC but my old Mojo DAC could produce truly excellent results with Spotify Premium. I also like the build quality - they are quite big and heavy but the velour pads are very comfortable for me.
I used to go to The Music Room as a hifi obsessed teenager in Manchester. They had The Source on display there for ages and I always lusted after one. Managed to finally get one many years later and it's a wonderful deck. Never managed to get an Odyssey arm but it sounds fab with a Kuzma...
I have a ticket for a lovely looking piano recital at LSO St Luke's tomorrow at 1pm, which I now cannot attend.
Ticket price was £16 but I will give it to anyone who would like it for a £5 donation to Parkinson's UK.

What an incredible evening it was too! I had gone to hear Fatma Said and DiDonato but my favourite soloists were actually Carlotta Columbo (soprano) , Beth Taylor (mezzo) & Hugh Cutting (countertenor). The choir were the best I have heard for Baroque music. Stellar entertainment.
