Michael Fremer's New Year's vinyl message

Thanks! I always wondered about the voice behind the words. He's a man whose prose fits his live persona.

Naim CD5 vs Apollo-R and Rega Dac

I'm thinking of trading my CD5 for an Apollo-R. Can anyone comment on what, if any, appreciable difference this might make? Related boxes: Rega DAC and Teddy Pardo PR1 and ST60.

    Line Noise

I recently switch from a Naim system to a Teddy Pardo system, and while I'm pleased with the difference, I'm noticing line noise that I hadn't heard before. Most noticeable are the switches on and off of various devices (household) on the circuit. I suspect there are a number of remedies; what...

    Lou Reed RIP

First Lou Reed Album: White Light, White Heat. He could do no wrong in my little mind ever afterward. Difficult to express how his passing strikes me. A voice that collapsed generations and had a low threshold for bullshit.

    sensibly priced fountain pen

I have to agree with the Pelikan Souverän. I use one daily (their fine point is more a medium in other pens) and they last for years. I recently picked up a couple of Sailors (oh my!) which have wonderful nibs. They are affordable, well crafted and offer a number of nib sizes.

Grammar, Spelling and the Correct Utilisation of Verbiage.

Reading through various threads in the "Off Topic" section and then coming upon this one, it occurs to me that those protesting the "evolution" of the language seem to share certain attitudes on change with Maggie Smith's character in Downtown Abbey, for whom the introduction of electric light...

Is there a place for literature...

Ha! Many thanks for the above. It brightened my lunch break. I'm a big fan of Sebald's prose (it shares some of the seemingly flat narrative affect with the Marias I've read) but have't read his poetry. Have *Downriver* on my "to read" pile. Alan: Your anecdotal illustration of Carr's summary...

33 Of The Most Hilariously Terrible First Sentences In Literature History

Interesting similarity to the opening of Marquez's *One-Hundred Years of Solitude*: "Many years later, as he faced the firing squad, Colonel Aureliano Buendia was to remember that distant afternoon when his father took him to discover ice."

Is there a place for literature...

Thanks, Jimbob, for reminding me of this thread's intention. Are you familiar with Fred Exley's *A Fan's Notes*? A gritty/comic self-examination of aspiration and personal shortcomings: a wanna be writer distracted by women and booze. Fiction and confession blur; fimiliar subject matter, yes...

Is there a place for literature...

Cav, my own shortcomings on these pages notwithstanding, I'm a bit more preoccupied with getting them to read and then conjure an original thought to put on a page. I'm devoted to getting them to interact with a work and try to be receptive to developing an internal, reflective life. Once they...
