phasemation 300 obliterates Ortofon Cadenza Black

I suspect that - even for tonearms produced in larger numbers to a more standard spec than J7's PU7s - there is likely to be some sample-to-sample variation in effective mass, given the number of factors that affect it. (Not straightforward to measure, either). So while agreeing with you in...

phasemation 300 obliterates Ortofon Cadenza Black

I'm enjoying the Zyx Ultimate 100 from their new range of carbon-cantilevered carts. Matches well with my PU-7 tonearm with effective mass approx. 12-13g. I posted a review on HFW soon after trying it. Link: https://hifiwigwam.com/forum/topic/125420-zyx-ultimate-100h-mc-cartridge/ Cheaper than...

Nice new ZYX Cartridge available and on Demonstration

Sure. The cartridge is only ~5gm and so, depending on your tonearm & counterweight setup, it may be worth adding the TB or SB base..... see: <http://www.zyx-audio.com/products_accessories_base.html>

Nice new ZYX Cartridge available and on Demonstration

I've owned the high-output (H) version of the Zyx Ultimate 100 since 2017, and (still!) think it is excellent. Here's the review I posted earlier: https://hifiwigwam.com/forum/topic/125420-zyx-ultimate-100h-mc-cartridge/ Like GT, I think the carbon cantilever makes the Zyx 'house sound' -...

    Neutral and transparent amplifier?

Back to the OP's question. I've used Bel Canto EVO2 power amps (with the Tripath chip) for several years and find them very transparent and neutral. I understand that the newer versions (using the ICE chips) are similar. Here's a review of the type I use...

    ZYX Cartridge Opinions

This is vital. Both the ZYX catridges that I use (Ultimate 100H and Airy 2) require the extra mass, and also benefit from careful calibration of VTF. I have no problem with tracking 45rpm releases, or with tracks that have a very wide dynamic range.

    Stylus lifespan

Thanks, that's very helpful. Your post provides an explanation for the expectation that line contact or other extended stylus profiles should have a longer lifespan.

Tracks to impress people / yourself??

Peggy Gou - Itgehane (track on the EP 'Once'). Once heard never forgotten. A good ol' workout for your entire system, source to speakers.

    Stylus lifespan

The Weiler article is interesting. But I wonder whether modern stylus profiles extend lifespan. One argument for the extended 'line contact' profiles is that notionally there is less wear. ZYX for example claims that their line contact styli are good for at least 2000 hours.

    Phonostage experience

Yes ..... I totally agree. I find in my vinyl system that carts and stages make the most easily heard differences to the sound. Why the stages should make such a big difference isn't clear, since all have similar specs in terms of RIAA or distortion.

    ZYX Cartridge Opinions

Couldn't agree more with Rockmeister. Excellent VFM in my opinion. I couldn't find any online reviews of the latest carbon fibre cantilevered ZYX Ultimate range, so when I got the Ultimate 100H, I posted my impressions on HiFiWigwam. The link to the review is given above in this thread in post #31.

    Phonostage experience

Interesting point of view! But I've used different phonostages - mostly a valve-based Icon Audio PS1.2 Signature, or a solid state Whest PS30.RDT - with the same source / power amplification and heard a significant difference. Similarly between the Whest and an Angel Audio SS phonostage. Do you...

    ZYX Cartridge Opinions

I agree about the older reviews but I posted the ZYX Ultimate 100H review on HiFiWigwam in 2017. This cartridge is available new in the UK for about £1300 now. FWIW I think that represents good value for an LOMC that performs as well as this one. Link to the review here...

    ZYX Cartridge Opinions

I find the ZYX house sound is distinct from those of several other leading LOMC manufacturers, and love it! I use both the ZYX Airy 2 and the new Ultimate 100H. I posted a review of the Ultimate 100H on the 'Wam In 2017 which captures my description of the ZYX house sound. No lack of 'soul' I...
