    RIP Tony Oxley

RIP I never tire of listening to TO in almost any context. I’m such a fanboy one of his Incus LPs is the only signed LP I have in my entire collection. (Martin Archer at Discus and Mark Wastell at Confront have released archive and new material in recent years. February Papers is essential...

Jazz Reissues (Individual and short runs)

Not quite sure who that would be - I doubt whether the musicians would have much say at the mastering/cutting stage. So I wonder whether the final mastering decisions would be down to RVG or Alfred Lion? The BN book from several years ago indicates that the BN sound was overseen by Alfred Lion -...

DGMono, who has posted here on occasion, visited a KG mastering session. I think I've linked this before, but if you haven't seen it it's worth reading. From memory there is some EQ, but minimal intervention: how-a-blue-note-remastering-session-works-dgm-visits-cohearent-audio

    Tone Poet Blue Notes

The 2023 list was cooler for me, but I think the following are essential: Andrew Hill - Dance With Death Herbie Nicholls - Trio McCoy Tyner - Extensions John Patton - Let Em Roll I’m dithering on Scizophrenia and Time For Tyner. I‘m already familiar with these titles, but I’ve become a bit...

    Tone Poet Blue Notes

Lucky you. In fact Extensions is one of the few BNs in the TP series that I wasn’t familiar with. Fortunately it was available to stream, and the TP sounds excellent. Thing is Gav, if we all list our faves, then we’ll probably end up with the complete list! I don’t think there’s too much...

I think you’d really like McCoy Tyner’s Extensions too. I’m sure the price will come down.

33 - although I’m still wondering how I ended up with a Tina Brooks LP. Must have been very cheap or a gift. I’ve only bought titles I’m really interested in, although most have been successful upgrades. Caveat - I was surprised that I prefer my 90s Capitol Rare Groove (AAA*) Let Em Roll to...

Agreed - great record. Gary Bartz and Wayne Shorter play so well together, no cutting competition. Everyone confidently at the top of their game, uncluttered yet powerful. In danger of being overlooked. File next to Joe Henderson’s Elements (minus the wha-wha sax).

Wonder why they’ve decided on a fascimile for this and yellow for BN? I assume its a nice quiet pressing and sounds good?

Jazz Reissues (Individual and short runs)

They were assumed lost when Tony Higgins was compiling Impressed comp, but looks as though they have been discovered according to Mike’s post from Discogs (maybe TH found them). As I say, Jonny Trunk usually credits needle drops - both Moonscape and Plays Moondog sound excellent btw. No idea...

Jazz Reissues (Individual and short runs)

It is indeed a classic of 60s British jazz. Have the master tapes been located at last? Has Jonny Trunk mentioned anything about how it was sourced? He usually does, and comes clean about needle-drops (for example the rare Kenny Graham plays Moondog and Michael Garrick’s very rare Moonscape -...
