What are you listening to right now #64

Working my way through this wonderful 3-LP comp: https://bornbadrecords.bandcamp.com/album/kiosque-dorphee-une-pop-e-de-lautoproduction-en-france-1973-1991

Truly different.. cover versions, that spark joy

Another version of Suicide is Painless. This is a very atypical track from Anne Imhof’s stunning album Faust.

Sorry. I didn’t realise this topic has been covered in another thread. I probably avoided it because of Gallagher in the title 🤨

Potentially great news, certainly for the planet: https://gy8.eu/news/its-vinyl-jim-but-not-as-weve-known-it/

Your Albums of the Year ‘24

I have been following Bardo Pond for 30 years and have everything they have released, but their latest LP, prosaically called Volume 9 and just released, has their most astounding track in War Is Over. It is overwhelming and reduced me to tears.

Does anyone have a vinyl only system?

My byline says 100% vinyl. That’s not quite true. I listen to CDs in the car (obviously can’t listen to vinyl there), and I do have a CD player in my system but I listen to it (reluctantly) about once a year. Otherwise, I’ve been vinyl only for over 60 years.

    Phono stages and diminishing returns?

For a long time, I used a Kondo M7 preamp with built-in MM phono stage. Front end was a Grand Prix Audio Parabolica turntable, Viv Labs 7” arm, Kondo IoM cartridge, Kondo SFz transformer. I wondered if the revered Kondo M7 Phono stand-alone phono stage would make a big (or any) improvement...

What concert have you last been to #3

I just saw Cranes in Portsmouth. They are doing a very short tour for the 30th anniversary of their Forever album. Haven’t seen them live since the early 90s. They were very good considering they must be pushing 60 now.

This is a great thread. Keep them coming! My contribution: any tracks from Johnny Cash’s American III. For example:

    RIP Sixto Rodriguez

Yes. I saw the film when it first came out. I’d never heard of Rodriguez and it was a real (pleasant) shock when the filmmakers found out he was still alive. The scenes of him going to South Africa were moving and magical.

    Bizarre Headline and Support Combos

Neil Young at the NEC, Birmingham, supported by Sonic Youth. Sonic Youth were booed throughout. Perhaps nobody had heard Neil’s more outré offerings (e.g. Arc).

    Greatest Guitar Solos.......ever

I love the way that Kryssi Battalene is taking guitar playing in a new direction with her bands Headroom and Mountain Movers. Check out for example: https://headroomnhv.bandcamp.com/album/head-in-the-clouds
