    Goodbye press n peel

Hi Tony, I also used to use press and peel until I got fed up with it and then managed to pick up an old (4-tube) RS 556-238 cheaply a couple of years ago. I haven't done that many PCBs but have used photo resist boards from Mega and latterly Maplin. I found the Maplin ones leave a visible...

Lavardin Plywood rack, someone built it?

Thanks for the comments. I must admit, it was the use and visual attractiveness of plywood that was the main appeal of the Lavardin approach. That it didn't appear to sound worse than the ('oil-rig' style) Frameworks rack it replaced was a bonus! Tony

Lavardin Plywood rack, someone built it?

The Lavardin approach sounded good to me. Having said that I did deviate by have stackable shelves and non-wooden parts (the spikes). The whole thing is cut from a single sheet of 22mm 8' x 4' birch ply, which gave a total of 10 shelves. Each leg is either 4 or 5 pieces glued together: As...

    Servicing Linn Saras

If it's of any help, I have a new-old-stock Sara bass unit (sp1014) I bought on ebay a couple of years ago that I'm probably never going to use. Although the drive unit itself doesn't have any Linn markings on it, it did come in a box covered in Linn parcel tape. It doesn't have the white centre...

How do I find the size of some bolts I need?

IIRC and assuming metric, for a socket-headed cap screw (i.e.,parallel sided head), a 3mm allen key would equate to a 4mm thread and a 4mm allen key = 5mm thread. For a button headed socket screw (i.e., domed head) the key will be smaller again, though I'd need to check and I'm a couple hundred...

    Monoblock wiring and ground/earth puzzlement

I find a bit of trial and error is usually required. I'd start off having no connection anywhere between 0V and mains earth (like all the Naim gear I've ever seen), although the preamp psu and power amp casework must be safety earthed. I've also had cases (no pun intended!) where 0V and mains...

quick question about transformer VA ratings

Hi Ian, Don't know if this would be of use - I've just scanned in a couple of pages (page 1, page 2) from an old copy of Radio & Electronics World. I still refer to this when doing initial psu calcs. The only downside is that you have to choose a ripple value to plug in to the calcs, which...

Discharging 30,000uF of caps - safest way?

Hi trancera, the amps are doing very nicely, thanks. They're still squatting in one quarter of my living room at the moment, though I'm in no particular hurry for them to go off to their new home :) - I don't think I've used my own amps for a good few months, now. I am hoping to recover some...

Trying to Build a Quiet PC - PSU recommendations ?

I've been trying to build quiet PCs for a couple of years now, so here's my 2p worth. I have a Seasonic S12 'energy plus' 550W psu in one of my PCs. Quiet PC Review reckoned it was pretty quiet, but I didn't think it was that quiet (i.e. it wasn't silent) and could be improved upon. I tried a...
