    Manticore Mantra repairs

A few photos of the motor fitted to the top spec Mantra. It came with a vial of grease which I use to lubricate the bottom of the motor.

GAS ENGINEERS. Ally or s/steel heat exchangers?

I’d be looking at which boiler has the more efficient controls. I have an 8 year old vaillant boiler; as far as I can tell it has quite a sophisticated controller, making it very efficient.

    Manticore Mantra repairs

I wouldn’t worry about platting the platter and plinth level, mine isn’t. It’s more important to get the bounce right. A few years ago I decided to set it up with the plinth and platter perfectly level, sounded terrible. Went back to setting it up so the bounce was right, platter and plinth are...

    Manticore Mantra repairs

The ball won’t come out; it’s been pressed onto bearing hole. The ball burnishes the bearing hole, producing a very smooth finish. Manticore instructions advise that hypoid 80 should be used. In fact they supply a small vial containing hypoid 80, for topping up the bearing.

    ALWSR Build Thread

It could be caused by insufficient voltage at the SR input. What is the output voltage of the 317

ALWSRs completion. Mounting, isolation and transformer choice.

Chris If you're powering a 72, you would only require 2 super-regs, if you're putting the regs in the power supply. With a voltage drop of 39 to 24 you could put a capacitor multiplier before the SR. They are very simple to make, film caps, resistors and a transistor. There will be diagrams...

    MMK/Tantalum feedback capacitors.

ramona You’re not wrong about the cost of wet tants. I bought 2 x 86uf a couple of years ago, with the postage cost from Texas (I think) the total cost was about £80. I wanted to add more weight, which the Tants gave me, but it was at the expense of the more open/detailed sound the MMK’s...

    MMK/Tantalum feedback capacitors.

For the past 10 years I’ve been using MMK capacitors (2 x 22uf per channel) in feedback position in my mono 110’s. Yesterday due to fact I was “locked down”, with not a lot to do, I decided to add another 22uf MMK per channel. Unfortunately (or maybe not) I was unable to solder it in place and...

    Recapping ALW Super Regulators

Alan, I don't think there is a problem with the phono board feedback caps, but I check them out after I've sorted out the super regs. I have a pair of wet tants that may be suitable.

    Recapping ALW Super Regulators

About 10 years ago I modified my 62 pre-amp and managed to squeeze 6 super regs into the box. I was very happy with the improvement, so much so, I haven’t made a single modification to it since. About 12 months ago I started to notice a deteriation in sound quality, but put it down to turntable...

Any point in "serving" a CDPS?

If you want an improvement try Siemens/Epcos Sikoral for the analogue circuits. Compared to BHC ALS30’s you’ll hear far more detail. I used BHC and Sikoral in an XPS. On a particular track, with the BHC I’d be hearing 2 backing singers, with Sikoral, 3 backing singers, 2 female and 1 male...

    NAC62 modification resource - recommendations?

I’d recommend you don’t start modifying the 62 yet. You’ll have a 62 full of non standard components and a NNC200 full of non standard components, when you put them together and they don’t sound very good, you’ll have no idea why. You’ll end up going round and round in circles. Ideally you’d...
