What does it mean to you to be English?

Grew up in Leeds. Lived in France and Germany. Now live in Herefordshire. Don't think of myself as English at all. Yorkshire first, then European, then British, which is very different thing from English. When I was a kid, the only place you would see the flag of St. George was on a church, and...

Anyone here using ATC SCM20ASLT speakers?

I've had a pair of the 20s since 2015. I'm not a great fan. They are pretty good for rock, pop and stuff that needs slam and drive, but distinctly meuh with classical, especially baroque and choral. I haven't found them particularly reliable, either. The amp packs obviously needed attention not...

    'Nasty evil @%$kers. . .'

She never reinvigorated Britain. It was North Sea oil that did that, but most of the benefits were frittered or confiscated so that, unlike Norway, we have nothing to shew for it. (Actually, we do, an asset-stripped country that has been cruelly misgoverned by an ideologically driven and morally...

Today I have mainly been v3

... giggling at Oliver Callan's wonderful send up of Liz Truss on RTÉ radio 1 just now. All you have to do is put her many gaffs back to back and look on in wonder !

Brexit: give me a positive effect (2023 ‘Epic Fail’ box set edition)

Not the right time. Wait until after our election. Don't gift the Daily Heil a platform.

Tory leadership failure Part V: Rishi ‘Infosys’ Sunak

Unfortunately, I had to hear Sunak on the PM programme today. He sounded like a depressed gay Dalek. I wish to offend no-one. My son is gay. ... but Sunak's delivery is most irritating, not to mention vacuous.

    CD in 2024

I have the same pre (and probably amp). Front ends are Primare BD32 (CD, SACD, Bluray), Technics G and Melco N1A. The Technics (Goldring 1042 / Primare phono amp) is very good but inconvenient, the Melco is convenient, but not (via USB to the Pre as best connection) so good, the BD32 is...

Saturday morning, Radio 3, no Record Review ?

That's the first I've heard of that ! That really is a step backwards. An expensive tuner and aerial redundant, then. :(

Saturday morning, Radio 3, no Record Review ?

Ha ! I've just tuned in to France Musique Baroque, and they're playing the same bit of Handel (Lascia la Spina) as Service was on Radio 3 when I turned it off ! 😂 Karma ! Serves me right for being a grumpy g1t !

Saturday morning, Radio 3, no Record Review ?

Cut down to two hours, it seems. I'll have to go elsewhere for my Saturday morning radio. I can't stand the radio 4 Saturday morning programme, though it always served as a reminder to turn over to radio 3. Fortunately, we now have internet radio, so over we go to France Musique (baroque) or WDR.

Saturday morning, Radio 3, no Record Review ?

We need a revolution ! When's it on now ? I've just turned the lollipops and Superstars off. (Ok, I'm a grumpy old man, but 50 years on and off of listening habits are a bit hard to change. I wonder what the logic is ?)

    Stiga Garden machinery.

I wish ! It was always the plan, but then something happened. Still stuck in soggy Herefordshire. Maybe I'll come back to Leeds instead ! :)

    Stiga Garden machinery.

OK, some background. We've got quite a lot of grass in the garden, and long verges. It's just taken me over three hours just to do the verges with an Aldi petrol mower, Briggs and Stratton engine. The mowers take a real hammering on the verges, picking up stones and other road detritus. The...

    Stiga Garden machinery.

Does anyone have a view on Stiga, specifically the battery lawnmowers ? It's not a brand I know. I was looking for Stihl, but the local place only has Stiga. £350 for the 340e mower. A quick look online suggests that's a national offer, but is it any good ? For the price, I could buy 5 Aldi...

Come to Norfolk they said - driest county in England they said!

You need contrasting cold air to provoke the precipitation.
