    PFM DIY Help Exchange

Orange caps should be OK given it is a later deck, it is worse on the 48x/58x/68x series decks. The ones in the bias oscillator go first. A head alignment guague is needed for Naks to set the pinch roller arm height, and also head tilt, a track alignment tape is needed for head height, as well...

    Mission 752 maintenance / improvement?

If freedom, they should be fine, if the original non-freedom the tweeters are ferrofluid and that may need replacing as well as the electrolytic capacitors in the crossover. I had both versions of the 751 and much preffered the freedoms.

What’s the deal with vintage MM cartridges ???

Im enjoying this thread thanks! here are most of my MM cartridges, I don't own any Shure's any more but do have reasonably equivalent Stanton/Pickering, ADC and so on. Some of these are classics, some a bit newer. For a while I spent a fair bit of time searching for styli for these, sometimes...

    Yamaha KX 380 cassette deck

And those Nakamichi RX well covers often get lost. The Tandbergs do need re-capping as they can be fitted with a few types of european capacitors that don't age well, yellow can axials and so on. The Philips also has many of the blue axials in which can go bad over time. I would like to own a...

So Good... I built it twice!

Thanks for the heads up, have ordered 10 OM2.7's and also the 3 to try. Not that I need more amp PCB's to build, test and use!

    Sony TC-766-2 advice

Very nice deck, yes its a dual capstan belt so will be important to ensure the belt is the right dimensions, width is important as it can affect tape tension between the capstans. Pretty sure the deck weighs north of 30kg so its a proper beast!

    Yamaha KX 380 cassette deck

I've been working on a few interesting decks recently, a Philips N5748, part of the "Black tulip" range and very expensive when new. 3 ferrite heads, a huge Papst direct drive motor and insustrial transport. Replacement 3d printed gears fitted, new belts/pinch roller and a full recap. Sounds...

dug out the old cassette deck...

That Technics is a nice deck, the "AX" head is amorphous which is a good thing. The Adres noise reduction unit in my pic is broadly similar to dbx, dbx is 2:1 where Adres and high-com are 1.5:1 so there is no "breathing"

dug out the old cassette deck...

I agree it is an affliction Werner. As well as the 15 in that picture I have the 5 Tandbergs and probably 30 or so more Nakamichi's, Aiwa, Sony, Pioneer, Goodmans, Kenwood, Technics and so on that need service, plus a few others in the other systems that I've recently serviced. Reel to reels I...

dug out the old cassette deck...

I've got a second Arcam as well but is tatty and sadly needs a logic board. Pretty sure my working one is a pre production example as the labels on the back are hand written. I have carried out some sensible mods as well - bipolar capacitors and max4066 cmos switches

dug out the old cassette deck...

Really enjoying a rapidly growing thread on cassettes, here some of my interesting decks: https://photos.app.goo.gl/Dk9ioLSTwgmFF2AJ7 Sadly don't get much spare time to post on here as I'm always fixing cassette decks and reel to reels. Right now I am servicing five Tandbergs - a 440A, a 330...

    Nakamichi tape decks : query

I could fix both decks, the eject cable is easily resolved with one cable tie, no need for fancy repairs as, the nylon in the transport shrinks slightly over the years which causes the clamp to crack. I am in Sheffield UK, if you are in another country you may be able to find someone local to...

A new second hand cassette deck

Yes most decks have the left hand capstan travel slightly lower than the right to tension the tape and stretch it slightly, this is supposed to reduce flutter. If you have a scope and a proper speed calibration tape you can see the difference in the traces, but dual capstan decks are much more...

A new second hand cassette deck

I would definitely Aiwa's are one of the better makes of decks to have, as you say the vast majority are pretty bullet proof and even now reliable, rarely have I had an Aiwa that needed more than belts and idlers and a general service, top notch mechanics for the most part and good sound...

    Phono stage, loading resistor values

I used a 6-position rotary in the back of mine, from memory they were 75, 100, 150, 220, 330, 470. Depends how high/low you want to go. I have a few Denon cartridges some of which have low coil resistance (DL-304, DL-S1 etc) so wanted to try a lower loading @75, then guessed 470 is high as...
