    The State We’re in

George Monbiot's piece in today's Guardian provides a glimmer of hope.

Interesting New Amplifier from Thomas and Stereo. Large capacitor banks good or bad?

There are certainly some in the DIY community who maximise psu capacitance to the nth degree, and the true believer probably regards Thomas's 100,000uF per channel as a starting point. The concept of a massive reservoir of power is particularly attractive if you play heavy rock or organ music at...

    The 2024 Formula One Season

Jos seems determined to lever Christian Horner out of Red Bull, giving interviews to the press which pour petrol on the flames. It's bizarre that the best team on track seems to be tearing itself apart behind the scenes. Something will have to give sooner or later - one side or the other, Thai...

    The 2024 Formula One Season

It's taken the Captain longer than usual but you feel it was only a matter of time.......:) (If they start wielding the BOP later on, where does that leave the customer teams?)

    The 2024 Formula One Season

A thoroughly professional job, no real surprise, but still disappointing. If the pole sitter has managed to retain a brand new set of softs then the rest are fighting for second place. BOP has no place in F1, but Liberty Media must be getting worried........ We could be in for a cracking WEC...

    Six Nations 2024

That was always the way, I suppose, but now that scrums are fed and the hooker no longer hooks, the 'skill' lies in kidding the ref into penalising the opposition. Which is a shame.

    Radio 3 recent changes.

I can tune out the occasional promo, but find it much harder to ignore the presenter who witters on after Radio3 In Concert every evening. Her voice and demeanour might (possibly) suit CBBC. On R3 they just sounds weird. And wasn't it someone on pfm who referred (last year?) to Carsick FM...

Which composers do you find yourself bored by?

I've occasionally wondered how our taste is formed. Nature over nurture? Whether you expect to work at it, or wait for it to grab you? What if I'd gone to Uni and discovered Soft Machine rather than Russ Conway??? I only know Bax's piano sonatas - they seem like a gentle intro.

Which composers do you find yourself bored by?

Interesting. I really enjoy Chopin but it has to be a great pianist and I have to be in the mood. But I can sympathise with the reaction: I tried to read 'The Sorrows of Young Werther' years ago and gave up after a few pages, thinking ' He just needs a good slap!'

Which composers do you find yourself bored by?

Bored by Bruckner, repelled by the second Viennese mob. But both fill concert halls, so they obviously appeal to some folks. The terms 'atonal' and 'music' are mutually exclusive for me. Some people like Campari. Baffling!

    The 2024 Formula One Season

Only an insider can really know what is going on, obviously, but I've seen a suggestion that Jos and Helmut are trying to ease out Mr Spice. While fanatical obsession seems to be an essential ingredient for success these days, I can't help wondering what a team run by those two would look like...

Uncensored Putin interview has been deleted

As the resident pedant, I'll just point out that the above is a frequently seen contraction of Grey's "Where ignorance is bliss, 'tis folly to be wise." Which is a different concept, but probably does apply in Putin's Russia.

Have dacs changed so much in 10 years.

With regard to mental health, I'm afraid there's no known cure for upgraditis. As noted above, what differentiates the majority of DACs is the quality of the power supplies and (these days) of the pre-amp. Both cost money to implement, and rrp = BOM x 10 is (or used to be) a rough guide to what...

    Words you love.

Plumptious! Or did Ken Dodd make that up? And truffle.
