    Iconic parts of Hifi ...

Well done! Actually its a SL110 with SME 3009, but from that photo, impossible to differentiate between those two related models

    Sheltered Accommodation

I third this suggestion, but if Quads are too big, consider the more slender ELS from Martin Logan or others, I have a rarer pair from InnerSound, and regularly listen at very low levels, they just seem to work very well in this way. They work very well loud too btw, but that's another story :)

    Celebrity hifi systems

agreed, very interesting read. Its interesting how often Steve has come up in this thread. I remember clearly a hifi mag (Hifi Answers or something like that?) in the late 70s, maybe early 80s that did a piece on Steve and his already large record collection. I can still see the Yamaha NS1000m...

    B&W 801 D4

my best friend has a pair of 800 D3's the predecessor of this speaker, now in a large room, he drives them with 600W Krell, pretty awesome, but they are very revealing, as you would expect, and can sound harsh, if not paired with the very best, from what I can tell. They and he are now in...

    sme 3009 armboard/tracking issue?

one thought from me, looking at one of your photos, it looks like you didn't have all the 4 screws in place. I would expect the cutout in the ply to be oversized a little to the actual can of the SME tonearm, so maybe you can re-position the whole arm assembly a couple of mm further back...

    PVC outer sleeves

I know I wrote earlier that I had no damage and that I would continue with PVC. A couple of things, I am not a big collector, and as I have said, 99% of all my original records purchased in the late 70s are still ok today, all were and are still covered by PVC. However, after careful...

    PVC outer sleeves

Interesting post and youtube video. I have records dating back to when I first started collecting records in the late 70's and I religiously put them in PVC covers on the day of purchase, hating the 'cheap, flimsy alternative covers' at the time. I have just gone through the oldest records I...

getting new records out of their sleeves

Is it me, or have new records become increasingly difficult to extract from their inner (often horrible thin card!) sleeves! I'm 57 and just spend 5 mins trying to extract Flying Dream 1 from its hard inner sleeve...nightmare, I am sure it didn't used to be this hard, back in the day. Once out...

SME V - To damp or not to damp? That is the question...

I remember that now as a practical benefit with the old series 2. My current tonearm, Tabriz does suffer some run-in groove bad behaviour, so this would be good to avoid with a little damping. Do you achieve this with different paddle size or less fluid, I assume the V is similar to the old FD200

    4 - 0 so far! looks like a walkover

SME V - To damp or not to damp? That is the question...

I wasn't sure if difference compliance and other facts might make damping preferable either. Re the warp point, my Gyrodec does a great job with its clamping design to avoid this issue, so another reason to not bother.

SME V - To damp or not to damp? That is the question...

About to pick up a recent early Xmas present to myself :) I have run an old 3009 series 2 Imp with the add-on Damper...The SME V has one built-in. So any users or others with experience, views, please. I will be running it on a Gyrodec, with either an Ortofon Quintet Black S or a Technics...
