To be honest I might just bite the bullet and order from Custom Designs. I've had Paul's stands and hifi racks before and as you say the quality is first rate :)

I bought TDL2's in 1995 as part of my first separates system. Loved them, and I'm not sure I enjoy my current system much more than I did that one. Nostalgia maybe?
The Audioengine A2 are a superb product....I regret selling mine. I would imagine that fed from one of these inexpensive usb dac/headphone amps they would be even better!

I never really managed to get along with the Headline myself- I've owned it on two separate occasions though not powered by a hicap. I also demo'd one with Grado GS1000i and the top Grado PS which the dealer owned himself....all very underwhelming.
I ended up with the hifiman HE6 which I ran...
I bought an XS expecting a big improvement but ended up returning it and keeping my Nait5i-2. Try and audition if you possibly can. Many prefer the sound of the XS!
Finding the right headphones is probably as much of the battle here in my experience anyway.
If you're on the train, you'll want to cut out all the noise going on around and just get the music!
I can vouch for the Ultimate Ears range of headphones....they can be very akward at first until...
