    Just if anyone else has this problem in future, I've now heard back from Avondale - the ASR2 Shunt Regulator is designed for low current draw applications - e.g. a hicap powering a source (CD player etc) or lower current-drawing amp / speakers etc. So not a great match for planar headphones...
