    What's going on at Naim?

No thread which contains a quote from Joseph Conrad can be all bad... :)

How many watts does a Quad 306 burn when not playing?

Mmm ... I don't think so. According to the International Energy Authority: Norway is also historically a net exporter of electricity to neighbouring countries, reaching a record 20.5 TWh of net exports in 2020, making it one of the largest exporters in Europe. In 2020, over 90% of their...

    J E Sugden A48, Thoughts?

I had the mk1 and Mk 2 versions. The latter needed repair once - dead output transistor I think - and the nextel finish on the volume knob developed a sticky surface with constant handling. I seem to remember the Mk1 sounded a bit warm and cuddly, but that might have been my crappy speakers. But...

MacOS cd ripper that works (2023)?

I'm currently using it under MacOS 13.6 (Ventura)

    Cost of Living Hifi

No more nonsense than babbling on about the latest multi-thousand pound turntable or exotically-cased electronic wonder box. Perhaps it makes the buyers of such a little uncomfortable to hear of those in more straightened circumstances who get as much (maybe more?) pleasure from less exalted kit?

    HiFi - Variety and technology

A little dismissive, perhaps? The end result may be an analogue signal, but a Quad 303 and Hyper Nilai - based amplifier use different technologies. Computers - simple? In the 1970s, semiconductor manufacturers talked about '6 micrometer' processes which seemed pretty tiny (given that a human...

Have loudspeaker prices gone out of kilter?

The UK Office for National Statistics has calculated the average weekly earnings (regular pay) for July 2023 at £617 per month. In that context, £3k to £9k still seems pretty stratospheric. This is a luxury hobby/obsession nowadays and increasingly for the few, not the many. Ooh, that came out...

Small speakers , Lyngdorf 1120 and a few thoughts !

Last Saturday I should have received a pair of Dali Menuet SEs. The retailer sent a pair of ordinary Menuets by mistake. A little disappointed, I decided to try them out anyway. They sounded really good, so much so that I decided to keep them and get a refund on price difference. I find them...

    New Rega Speakers - Aya

And what about the not-quite-Io and the not-quite-Brio boxes on the sideboard?

    Temple Audio Monoblocks

In the end, no. The usual weeks of agonising (that's part of the fun, isn't it?) ended when I bought a pair of Hypex Nilai monobloc kits. They're not difficult to assemble, just plug/screw together (no soldering) the amp module with a power supply module, attach inputs and outputs, standby...

    RME ADI-2 Remote App Available!

I'm not sure I can be bothered with this. The Remote app doesn't always answer the helm and I really can't be fagged to find out why (even supposing I could). I'll plug the Mac mini into the TV and install wireless keyboard/mouse the next time I get round to it.

    RME ADI-2 Remote App Available!

Mmmm ... spent a little bit of time fiddling with this and it seems to work OK. I run a Audirvana Studio on a headless Mac mini connected via USB to the RME DAC, controlling Audirvana from an iPad. I've installed the ADI-2 Remote app on the mini, which I usually control using Screen sharing on...

    Mac to DAC

I started with a bottom-of-the-range 2014 Mac mini that was going begging. I really only used keyboard/mouse/screen for initial set-up. Controlling it from my iMac via Screen Sharing was tedious. Recently replaced by the base spec Mac mini M2 and the tedium has gone. Runs Audirvana Studio...

    Temple Audio Monoblocks

OK - I get the impression that 90dB plus speakers are desirable for these amps (though I don't think I could get away with horns in my house!). The Bantam One is another possibility - I think I will get in touch with Mr Clayton about this. Thanks for all the useful input, guys.
